My camera is placed just above the year on top of One Times Square in New York City. My job is to give you the closest camera view of the ball as it descends in the final minute of the year. I took this photo with the Insta360 One X. Here is a video I did one year on my YouTube www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sssip-D9hao&t=10s

And then there are the nights with a 'blue-cloudless-sky', and the only thing you seem to get is 'what I call' a simple 'ball-drop'. Just 'the sun' dropping into the western everglades horizon. Nothing more, nothing less. But it often forces you to 'get creative'! Why not...you're already there! LOL]

At 12:58 PM, the ball rises to the top, then at exactly 1:00 PM GMT the ball drops quickly to the bottom, where it rests until the next day. This time device was built in 1833 and has been in used daily since then. It is visible from the River Thames where sailors could set their watches to 1:00 PM when it dropped.
This photo shows the ball mid-way in its drop which lasts only a second or so.

Times Square New Years Eve 2011
Each year during the New Year’s Eve celebration in Times Square in Manhattan New York City a time ball made by Waterford Crystal and electric lights is raised to the top of a pole on the One Times Square building at 6:00 pm and then lowered to mark the coming of the New Year. The ball descends 77 feet (23 m) over the course of a minute coming to rest at the bottom of its pole at midnight, then a sign with the digits of the new year lights up as the ball's lights turn off. Toshiba's Times Square billboard directly below the ball counts down to midnight as well.
Every year up to one million people gather in Times Square to watch the ball drop and an estimated 1 billion watch the video of the event, 100 million of them in the United States.
In 1904 The New York Times opens its new headquarters on Longacre Square (the city's second tallest building) and persuades the city to rename the triangular "square" for the newspaper. Owner Adolph Ochs initiates a massive celebration in the square for New Year's, which is so popular 200,000 came it permanently displaces the celebration from Trinity Church. There is no ball, but there are fireworks.
1907 Walter F. Palmer chief electrician for The Times creates the first New Year’s Eve Ball in response to the behest of publisher Adolph Ochs to create some kind of spectacular midnight show that would draw attention to the Square. The New Year’s Eve Ball first descended from a flagpole at One Times Square constructed with iron and wood materials with 100 25-watt bulbs weighing 700 pounds (320 kg) and measuring 5 feet (1.5 m) in diameter. At first it dropped 1 second after midnight.
In 2011 the tradition continues here is a look at Times Square New York City on December 31st 2010 New Years Eve for the big 2011 ball drop celebration.

Celebrated New Year's eve with family in Times Square and watched the ball drop at midnight. The ball came up the pole at 6 pm and every hour after there were fireworks and countdown to midnight. It was cold and windy but the experience was worth it.

Happy New Year everyone! Hola 2012! Are you ready to share your kiss?
A huge thanks to all who have stopped by this past year and took the time to give me some feedback. The amount of talent displayed on flickr every day is incredible and the inspiration I draw from your posts is very deep. I look forward to seeing what the new year will bring...

Friday afternoon I decided to grab my camera bag and hop the train into the heart of New York City - Times Square - because I knew it would be crazy and I wanted to immerse myself into the thick of it. I wanted to feel the energy of the place.
I wasn't disappointed. I spent more time soaking it all in then I did shooting.
It was interesting watching everyone else, from all over the world, holding every kind of camera imaginable, try to capture a bit of this place. It certainly can be daunting with the thousands and thousands of people streaming this way and that as the countless neon lights flashed and swirled and the traffic moved in fits and starts - while in the midst of it all the steady whirlwind of activity as stages and lights, cables and speakers were assembled, erected and laid went on in preparation for the New Year's Eve festivities just a day away.
All of that amazing amount of action didn't stop anyone from posing and snapping - and smiling.
It made me smile too...

New York City has always held a special place in my heart for a number of reasons but mostly because I lived 45 minutes from “The City” for all of my childhood. I’ve spent many nights in the city with family, watched numerous Thanksgiving Day Parade’s, ice-skated, seen Broadway plays, ballets, watched the Rockettes and enjoyed The Nutcracker. The one thing I had never done though, was bring my SLR to capture photos of the city.
I spent New Years Eve in New York and decided that I was going to bring my camera and be on top of the city at blue hour before The Ball dropped. The top of the Rockefeller Center Building (also known as “Top of the Rock” and home to NBC Studios) has some of the best views of the NYC skyline: Times Square off to the right, the Empire State Building and World Trade Center in the middle, the Brooklyn Bridge to the left ... in fact, you can see where “The Ball” is setup on the very right of the photo, all set to go for the midnight countdown!
I arrived at Top of the Rock at sunset and staked out my spot on the 68th floor, between 2 sections of the glass walls. The spacing between glass panels is just wide enough for a lens to fit through and that’s exactly what I did. Tripods aren’t allowed and I had to hand-hold the camera and keep shutter speeds short by increasing the ISO and aperture.
Just below Top of the Rock lies one of NYC’s most famous restaurants: The Rainbow Room, which holds a special place in my heart. In 1986 the Rainbow Room underwent a major renovation, overseen by Joseph Baum, my great-uncle. The Rainbow Room and other restaurants he spearheaded like The Four Seasons and Windows on the World (on top of the WTC) became some of the most well known and highest grossing restaurants in history. Although I was too young to participate, my family had many parties at the Rainbow Room, just a few floors below where I was standing to take this picture.
I thought about staying to watch The Ball drop, or even trying to barge my way into The Rainbow Room to pretend I was partying with my great-uncle but when my belly started to rumble I decided it was time to go. Happy New Year everyone!

I couldn't be happier and more eager to look forward to a New Year while still remembering 2018 forever because although not everything went as planned, it was the year with the biggest changes and challenges for me which will continue in 2019, the year that brought me closer than ever to the person i want to be, to solving all my problems that have been dragging on for years, to fulfilling my wishes and to making my dreams come true. So i am thankful for all the chances i got because i managed to solve and learn so many things but also to the plans that didn't work out yet, to the doors that were closed to my face and the people that showed their real faces to me because i know where i stand better than ever before, i am thankful for the happy dreams i made come true but also for the hard lessons i truly needed to be reminded of because it's better to lose a battle now than an entire war later and because a mistake can cost you millions but a lesson well learnt can bring back billions. So here's to 2019, i am so looking forward to it, more ambitious, open-minded and motivated than ever ! #newyear #ny2019 #newyear2019 #happynewyear #feelings #wishes #newyork #timessquare
