This girl travels in a ball of light...

Cette fille voyage dans une boule de lumière ...

Hellfire Bay is part of Cape Le Grand National Park. It is a national park in Western Australia, 631 km south-east of Perth and 56 km east of Esperance. Hellfire Bay is thought to be named after St. Elmo's fire. This is a weather phenomenon in which luminous plasma is created by a corona discharge from a sharp or pointed object in a strong electric field in the atmosphere (such as those generated by thunderstorms or created by a volcanic eruption).

The phenomenon sometimes appeared on ships at sea during thunderstorms and was regarded by sailors with religious awe for its glowing ball of light, accounting for the name. Sailors may have considered St. Elmo's fire as a good omen. The area is an ancient landscape which has been above sea level for well over 200 million years. (Wikipedia)

So, much like I recently acquired a 10-24mm lens, I also squired a 50-140 Telephoto. I have a Teleconverter for it, but I wanted a bit more reach for some of the Elk in the area. This is the sun dropping down at Cowee Mountain Overlook on the Blue Ridge parkway in North Carolina. It was a pleasure to be up there in the chilly fall air, first day of October getting some new shots, and trying out the techniques with these new lenses.

The scientists were in a great excitement this night. An unusual natural phenomenon showed itself in the clear night sky between the stars: red and glowing appeared a ball of light behind the mountain silhouette. They are still wondering if it's a unknown solar system up to now – maybe with a new kind of life?

Eine ungewöhnliche Naturerscheinung zeigte sich am klaren Nachthimmel zwischen den Sternen: rot und glühend erschien ein Lichtball hinter der Bergsilhouette. Norway maple is one of the most common trees in German cities or villages and is particularly noticeable at the beginning of spring, when a large number of yellow-green umbels emerge from roads, avenues and parks in a fresh, bright green before the darker leaves, while many other trees are still largely bare.

So, the excitement about the Harvest Moon infected me as well and I decided since I hadn’t taken any moon pictures in ages, the time was ripe for this. The excitement began to escalate and then turn into despair when I started to look for the moon around 8:30 that night and couldn’t find it anywhere. Not a cloud in the sky and I can’t see the moon. Do I need to go back to my ophthalmologist for some more work? Finally, about a half hour into my search which not only involved walking various quadrants in the yard but also diligently covering various quadrants in the sky, I located the ball of light hiding behind some trees. Well, that wasn’t good. By 9:00 pm I had lugged my equipment outside and was fiddling with some settings, when I realized that all I was doing here was re-arranging the chairs on the deck of the Titanic. The moon simply would not rise above the trees. Off to the truck with the equipment and setting off for a more moon friendly location. 800 metres down the road I find the perfect spot and the rest is history. Well not quite. On my way back as I pull into the cul-de-sac, I realize that the moon had been quite accessible this whole time from the front of the premises. Arrrggghh! Actually, not a complete waste of time since I found a walk bridge in the distance crossing the river that holds promises for some further night shooting activity.

The only question remaining is, who wouldn’t want to bring in the harvest whilst being illuminated by this?

The bright shining ball of light moves at such an incredible pace across the sky. As it moved along its path and to my right, I could see an opportunity to place it in my image. However, it moves so fast it was necessary to be where it was not, and wait only moments for it to arrive.

A very difficult and special picture.

Taking a picture of the Milky Way is not easy because you depend on many external factors: Night without moon, no clouds, no light pollution and right time of the year, but trying to take this kind of pictures in the North of Poland is even harder, since the Sun light never “disappears” from the Sky. Between 22 and 3 AM you got a huge ball of light that goes from West to East very close to horizon. Sunrise was at 3:30 that day.

You can see this light on the left side, by the way my first Milky Way since I arrived to Poland one year and a half ago.

This picture was taken in Mazury, North East of Poland, close to Russia, a region with more than 2.000 lakes like the one in the picture, under the Milky Way, the little peninsula with bungalows were we stayed.

Even on a brilliant, blue sky day, noon time in December takes on an otherworldly appearance. Reminds me in a way of seeing the sun during an eclipse. That subtle diminution of light that tends to destabilize the human psyche. Right now the sun seems absurdly low in the sky in the northern hemisphere. Depending on where you stand, it doesn't even clear the treetops which creates a daylong filtering effect. It seems now there is always something between me and the sun which heightens the effect. Further, the apparent size of the sun has shrunk down a very constricted ball of light. The glare of the summer sun dwarfs this (comparatively) small all of light. This always reminds me of a fake sun of the sort that would hang over the stage in a children's play.

I visit the cemetery often in December in search of scenes such as this. I often shun sunny days during the summer, but find them most desirable this time of year. I come in search of shadows rather than the objects that create them. I wander about looking mostly at negative space, and the effect of the diminished sunlight on the surroundings...seeing not what's here but what isn't here. It's a matter of seeing the ordinary world in extraordinary circumstances, and the way this all makes me feel. I love capturing these seasonal aberrations, in this case being able to include the noonday sun in a ground level scene...a shot not even remotely possible in summer.

Decided to go over to the University of Hohenheim for some blue hour shots since they are celebrating their 200 year anniversary this year While I was there, I happened to find this ball off light dancing around the man hole cover in front of the main structure at the University...... Actually I was out practicing with a tool I picked up from a light painting artist out of Australia called the Ball of Light. Hope everyone is having a wonderful weekend. :-)

Snowdrops in drizzle. There must have been a tiny drop of rain on the lens to produce the ball of light here, I think. I was kneeling on the ground on a small foam mat and my elbows using the 6D's optical viewfinder - much easier with a more modern rotating screen! The breeze also meant I had to keep the shutter higher and up the ISO.

Snowdrops are such a delightful sign of spring, but tricky to photograph with a shallow depth of field, as they have such a deep shape when close up. This is my favourite of the 30 or so shots I tried. I framed the flowers against a darker background to help them stand out. Thanks for looking!
