I mentioned before that I would kill for a good cupcake. Apparently I would stalk them, too. This weekend brought me across a bridge into Brooklyn's Greenpoint nabe for my lust for terrific cupcakes. For a brief few days my dream of a permanent Kumquat Cupcakery store came true in the form of a pop-up store.
Lit by a single ribbon of warm light, trays of freshly baked pastries line up with clockwork precision inside Budapest’s Great Market Hall. The symmetry and glow elevate everyday bread into a quiet celebration of craft—and invite the viewer to taste with their eyes first.
This little darling resides up high as a display in a bakery/coffee shop where we whiled away a bit of time between Greg's wedding and the reception. Her skin was cracked and blemished and the eyes were downright ugly.
I ran it through Photoshop to de-emphasize the strange wrinkles in her forhead, mend cracks, remove most of the blemishes and even replaced her creepy painted eyes with real eyes that you can see in original size. I thought the real eyes might add to the creepiness but seems to have helped reduce it instead.
Still, she does kinda look like a friend of "Chucky".

I'm a traditionalist when it comes to pastries. Why does this bakery make madeleines look like cupcakes? See upper right corner....Madeleines should look like lovely sea shells and taste all buttery. Man, I'm craving madeleines now. Hey, how about that? I found a segue into the next photo...

Before traveling to Amsterdam I had read about, and intended to try, stroopwafel. But, I didn't do enough homework to realize stroopwafel is 100% NOT the same thing as waffles.
On arrival we saw these loaded waffles in a number of store windows and 100% did NOT dare try them. (We saw a few people eating them but can't say how much longer they lived.)
As for stroopwafels, now that I realize what I've missed, I will have to look for them at Trader Joe's...
