Green Heron (Butorides virescens) I was facinated to watch this green heron using great intelligence to try and attract a fish. The lake is in a japanese garden where the oriental carp are fed by visitors throwing in specially purchased fish food. It is a spot by a bridge and the carp know where the food lies! The green heron was busy picking up bits of fish bait and stealthily placing it in a good spot and then waiting for the fish to swim up and investigate! I have since looked up a couple of videos on you tube where people have filmed this behaviour but it is the first time I have ever seen it for myself. Stupidly I didn't video it myself as it took me a few minutes to work out what was happening. What a clever bird!
The sun had set a while ago, the fish were biting and a fisherman was preparing to bait his rod on the Pompano Beach Pier in Florida.

This door isn't the stores main door, it's more to the right and more modern. They added on to this older part of the shop and it wasn't as interesting. ;-)

This young silver gull couldn't resist the discarded bait left on the rocks by a fisherman, but in the end, it dropped it and left it alone just like the rest of the gulls. Not quite to its taste maybe, or no chips to accompany it!

For the second time in the eleven years that I have been blessed to visit the Juniper Club and fish the Juniper River, a Barred owl has stalked our crew while fishing. The last time this happened was October of 2015. I have comparing photos of both and cannot tell if it is the same owl. In the wild they are known to have lived at least 18 years, so it certainly could be the same.
As shared back in 2015, this owl has learned to observe local fishermen. In our case we are using live bait, shiners that range in size from 4 inches to the much less desired slab…they run in the 7–8-inch range. Once hit by the bass, the shiners often die and are discarded. The owl has learned to wait and watch for floating baitfish that can be easily snatched from the surface, eagle style, and consumed.
This is a mixed blessing as it is always wonderful to see owls in the wild. The flipside of that coin is the sadness of knowing that dependance on humans isn’t a good thing and often times sets up an opportunity for some yahoo to come along and hurt this magnificent creature. Since it is rewarded and it is easier than the traditional hunt, it will pass on this trait to its young. Just like humans pass dependency to future generations.

Nature is persistent. Like a stubborn and loving grandmother, she weaves baits for us, so that, in the midst of this frenzy to forget everything, at least we don't forget beauty. However, we are the masters of distrust. We distrust the grandmother, we distrust the baits and finally, we distrust ourselves. However, nature is persistent. Maybe because of that, I keep coming here.

Stink bait is exactly what it sounds like: a stinky bait used to catch fish, especially catfish. You can purchase stink bait at bait shops.
This place was out of business and the truck looked abandoned - awful stinky to me!

I thought I would work on something that maybe will bring a little light after the past day or so of amazing winds and rain.
I suspect someone is getting ready to go Deep see fishing and needs some bait fish. The scene caught my eye with the orange net being cast out in amazing form... By the way, I was out taking images of the Manatees... You never know what you are going to see.
