This is a second shot of the route taken by the “Elevador da Bica” one of the so typical Lisbon funiculars.

For the previous one (the shot was taken looking upwards whereas this one is looking on the opposite direction – downwards) see my post here:

The nineteenth century funicular ascends one of Lisbon’s steepest hills, between the riverside and Bairro Alto.

Bica is considered Lisbon’s most picturesque funicular, leading up to the Bica and Bairro Alto neighbourhoods, an area full of distinctive buildings, little shops and some nice restaurants. Bairro Alto, is nowadays one of the trendiest neighbourhoods in the city.

Built in 1892, the funicular was initially moved by the water counterbalancing system, whereby movement was achieved by loading the car at the top of the hill with water until it was heavy enough to descend the hill and pull up the other car at the bottom of the hill. In 1896 the Elevador da Bica became steam powered, and in 1924 it was electrified.

Love the corporal expression of the funcular driver here 😊😊😊 This photo was taken on Saturday last week. A beautiful day to be enjoyed at the beach and not running a funicular packed with tourists!

This nineteenth century funicular is known as "Elevador da Bica" or "Ascensor da Bica" and is considered to be Lisbon's most picturesque funicular, running from Bica on the riverside to the Bairro Alto neighbourhood.

Lisbon is gloriously draped over seven hills. Shot into a valley in Bairro Alto between two of the hills. At the end of the valley you can see the Rua da Bica de Duarte, the domain of the Elavador da Bica here.

One of Lisbon's little trams urging itself up the hill in the Baixa district.

Back from Lisboa. This has been my first travel in what feels like years and it was amazing.

The Ascendor da Glória has been one of our first sights when we exited the underground and of course we walked up the hill (with all of our suitcases) instead of using it. Bad ideas....

In a few hours this street will be crowded!

This tram line only has two stops and climbs up a steep hill in the Bairro Alto disctrict.

Lisboa (Portugal)

I'm still working on my Lisboa Blurb book so it's back to my Lisbon portfolio.
