Class-10 Lava Falls Rapid is, without question, the biggest, baddest, meanest rapid in the Grand Canyon. It is considered by many to be the roughest whitewater in the nation. This rapid has been known to swallow up fully loaded one-ton rafts and then spit them out like popcorn. Our group was thinking about Lava Falls for 15 river miles from National Cyn Camp to the rapid itself. Eventually, it was show time, and what a show it was! We all got soaked but, remarkably, none of the boats flipped. Three cheers to our oarsmen. All remaining rapids after Lava Falls were minor, which was a relief. Anyway, the Grand Canyon from Lava Falls onward has experienced significant and repeated volcanism. Consequently, we saw numerous basaltic lava flows extending from rim to river, frozen in time. In the geologic past, the river had been dammed repeatedly by lava flowing into the river channel, only for each dam to ultimately get eroded away. This part of the trip was geologically remarkable! Our camp was at river mile 185.3.
