Track facts: The tracks where NASCAR runs come in three basic configurations. (Four, if you count the road tracks where they have to turn right every once in a while, but they only run a couple of races at road tracks, and I never watch those.) There are the big superspeedways like Daytona and Talladega, with tracks that run two-and-a-half miles. There are the one-mile short tracks like Martinsville or Bristol. Kentucky is one of the tracks that falls right in the middle, a 1.5-mile tri-oval. It looks very much like Charlotte Motor Speedway, where we saw a race last year, only there's no giant TV screen along the backstretch at Kentucky. You just look at hills. Also, the walls are green instead of yellow. The pit road layout is the same.
For a certain amount of money, it's possible to go down onto pit road and get up close to the cars and the drivers, if they're feeling sociable. This is why there are so many people down there in this picture. We did that once at Talladega, but the circumstances of this trip prevented it.

The purpose for our visit is two-fold—first, this is an excellent opportunity to learn about a migrant labor force in Boston and to see their living and working conditions first hand. The track can accommodate as many as 300 workers who groom or exercise the horses, clean the stables, etc. Many will find local housing and others are able to get a very small dorm room on the premises. Yet others still sleep in tack rooms, not designed for human habitation, but as storage for supplies. Like many migrant labor forces there is little in the way of benefits and protections afforded through laws. Vacation or sick time is unheard of and a day not worked will equal a day not paid. Therefore, it can be challenging for the workers to leave the track for medical care or other services. That brings us to the second reason for our visit—each year our team cleans the medical clinic and 8th Pole program trailer from top to bottom. The 8th Pole was founded in 1989 to provide substance abuse services to the population of backstretch workers on the track.
On the backstretch, Lagat and the crew put the hammer down. Leaving Webb and everyone else in their dust.
Steve Burton of xXx Racing-Athletico team hitting 40.2 mph as he enters the backstretch in Flying 200 meter race to qualify in fourth place for Matched Sprints at UCI Master's Track Cycling World Championships. Steve averaged 38.4 mph for an electronic time of 11.6 seconds. It was awesome to cross the finish line and hear the announcement of my time and see it on the stadium display
