On a day when Mother Nature wreaked havoc at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Dario got Andretti Green Racing a 500 win, as the skies opened up for the second time on the day after Marco Andretti walked away from a scary flip on the backstretch which brought out the final yellow. It was certainly the longest day I've ever spent at the Speedway and I was happy that the IRL did their best to get the whole race in. In the old days, the red and checkered flags likely would have come out the first time it rained at lap 113. For those that hung around, it was another 500 for the record books, as drivers tried to knock the walls down all around the track and the action got frantic each time the weather threatened.
Many of the expected contenders ran into problems (or someone else) as Kanaan and Weldon finished out of the top 10. My man Sam Hornish Jr. came back from a flat tire to take 4th after contact with Scheckter behind his teammate Helio who was exciting to watch all day. Scott Dixon took 2nd as he managed to keep his car clean and was in a position to challenge for the win before the final crash & rain sequence unfolded. And the Penske Junior team showed its stuff with my darkhorse pick Ryan Briscoe taking 5th. Greenville, SC – Hattori Racing Enterprises driver, Brett Moffitt overcame odds to finish 4th and Sergio Pena experienced engine failure to finish 29th in the Kevin Whitaker Chevrolet 150 at Greenville, SC on Saturday March, 31, 2012.
Both cars were fast in practice. Pena topped the charts for both practices of the afternoon. Moffitt was 2nd quick in the first practice and 14th quick in the second practice though they did not do a mock qualifying run.
“The car was real good in race trim,” explained Grimes, IA native, Brett Moffitt. “We just fine tuned it and worked on our race set up during practice.” “We drew the first qualifying position so we are a little worried about that, but the car is good so we will be fine.”
Pena was real happy after practice as well, “My car is fast. I am real happy with the balance and the forward bite. We have a great shot at the pole and winning the race tonight.”
Moffitt was the first car out to qualify and proved he was a car to beat, earning the provisional pole and being the first car to break into the 20 second bracket with a time of 20.980. However, after only six cars, the rain came and qualifying was subsequently cancelled due to weather.
Hattori Racing is a new team so they did not have owner points from 2011. Therefore Moffitt and Pena were relegated to 21st and 22nd starting positions. They earned their starting spots by race wins in 2011. Both had three series wins, Moffitt finished 3rd in the driver point standings, Pena was 5th.
“I’m excited,” Moffitt said. “We have a good car, I can be patient when needed and I know we can work our way through the field.”
Pena, a Winchester, VA native, wasn’t too worried either, “It is what it is. We are starting better than I thought we would, but we have a great car and will be fine.”
When the green flag dropped, the cars paced themselves and waited for the field to spread out. Unfortunately, Pena was the first caution flag of the night when his #1 JMS Toyota Camry lost a motor early in the race.
“It started losing power down the backstretch,” confirmed Pena. “Then just quit all together. It is so disappointing as I had a fast car all weekend long. We had such a good car and I am proud of my team.”
Moffitt started 21st and was mired in traffic the first part of the race. He cracked the top-10 at lap 64 and began to steadily pass car after car until he raced into 2nd position, where he rode for over 60 laps.
“I was trying really hard to save my tires,” Moffitt stated. “I just rode in second hoping to save enough for the end of the race.”
With a restart at lap 127, Moffitt had his chance. He got his nose underneath leader and eventual race winner, Darrell Wallace, Jr. and led lap 128 but Wallace, Jr. got his nose back under Moffitt and put him in the outside lane where two more cars managed to get underneath. Moffitt finished the race in the 4th position.
My (#11) Kobe Toyopet Camry was real fast,” Moffitt confirmed. “But I ran out of tires at the end. I just used up too much coming through the field. If we had started up front where I know we would have qualified, it might have been a different ending. But from where we started, 4th isn’t too bad.”
“I think we are moving in the right direction,” team owner, Shigeaki Hattori said. “We were the best cars in practice and would have started up front had we qualified. The cars performed well as did the teams.”
Hattori Racing Enterprises next heads to Richmond International Raceway on April 26, 2012 for their next event.
I rode in the race sponsor's hummer for the national anthem. Too bad I didn't get to hold an American flag this time! The picture was taken though the hummer's windshield on the backstretch entering turn 3.

He's 48 and faster than you! Funny thing is, this was the ONLY photo I got of the whole race because I left my camera in the safety of the car (due to dust levels) until the very last lap! By the time I got back with it, Dad was coming around the last set of curves on the backstretch!

One of the most hard-to-get-shots I've ever done; It took 12 trips/attempts on the Mark Twain to get the timing right, and when it finally did, the trees were too overgrown and I had the wrong ISO setting, which made for slower shutter speeds. Results were less than spectacular at first. Looking back at it, the tree blurs added a layer of motion to it and a little color adjustment gave it a new feel so all is not lost.
Bay Meadows (Nov 13, 1934 to Aug 17, 2008) was known for its early use of pari-mutuel wagering (with daily doubles), all-enclosed starting gate, tote board, & photo finish camera. The first horse to be transported by plane also landed here in 1945. The track was allowed to stay open during WW2 because it donated 92% of its profits to the war effort. Seabiscuit won the Bay Meadows Handicap twice, & Bill Shoemaker began his career exercising horses here. Other racing celebrities to run here included Silky Sullivan, Citation, Round Table, & John Henry. Russell Baze passed Laffit Pincay's win record here in 2006. The track was used for NASCAR races in the 1950s. Bay Meadows was home to the San Mateo County Fair.
Shoemaker & Longden Avenues are along the former Bay Meadows backstretch.

At the time of adding this description, this photo is the leader in views of my entire photostream. I figured maybe I should add a title, some tags and a description...LOL! We are looking towards the Start/Finish line (you can use the pressboxes as a reference) from the entrance of turn 1. Chicagoland Speedway follows the 'D' shaped tri-oval design. This means the home stretch isn't actually straight, it's an easy curve, with the true turns on either side and a straight backstretch. Rain storms had been in the area all weekend, and it was very hot and humid during the day. Racetime was around 7pm so the race begins in sunlight, but transitions to dusk and ends at night.

A lot of work on the head and face today. More neutral in color now. Even a bit more than this image. Recreated the hat. It's still a bit too "hot" and I will calm it down in a couple of days. I'm out of the backstretch and into the clubhouse turn on this one now.

Dynaforce repelled a challenge from heavily favored Mauralakana at the top of the stretch to power away to a four-length victory in the $588,000 Flower Bowl Invitational at Belmont Park Sept. 27.
Mauralakana held second by a neck over Communique, who finished third in the five-horse field. Hostess was scratched because of the bog-like conditions of the turf.
Dynaforce, owned and bred by Dr. John A. Chandler, was ridden by Alan Garcia.
Garcia hustled Dynaforce to the early lead in the 1 1/4-mile Flower Bowl and established dawdling fractions of :26.23, :52.87, 1:19.22, and 1:43.45. Her final time was 2:07.59 over the “yielding” inner turf course.
Maurakalana, ridden by Kent Desormeaux, was rated in fourth position down the backstretch. Running as the 3-5 favorite, Mauralakana drew even with Dynaforce at the top of the lane, and looked poised to sweep by the pacesetter. Dynaforce, however, kicked into another gear and quickly left the rest of the field in her wake.
“It was an easy trip,” said Garcia, who won the Flower Bowl last year aboard Lahudood. “She broke well and let me take the lead. I went head to head with (Rafael) Bejarano (aboard Jade Queen) and we had Mauralakana beat. In the last strides, Dynaforce showed her stuff.”
Desormeaux had ridden Dynaforce in her last two starts, but was committed to ride Mauralakana who had won five of six stakes this year.
“The lack of pace and the soft going probably compromised my chances,” Desormeaux said.
Trained by Bill Mott, Dynaforce returned $8.60 as the third choice.
“I'm real proud of her,” Mott said. “I saw the fractions and I thought the turf was pretty soft – I mean (2:07.59) for a mile and a quarter.”
Mott said he will discuss with Chandler the possibility of running Dynaforce in the Emirates Airline Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf (gr. IT).
Dynaforce, a 5-year-old daughter of Dynaformer out of the Diesis mare Aletta Maria, finished second in the Diana (gr.IT) at Saratoga in July. She was also second in the New York Handicap (gr.IIT) to Mauralakana – beaten a neck -- at Belmont in June. Dynaforce began her career in France with trainer Andre Fabre.
The Flower Bowl was her first win on American soil and her first graded win. The win brought Dynaforce’s earnings to $614,772. She has a record of 4-3-2 in 11 starts.

Commodore Downs opened to Thoroughbred racing in 1973, but had financial problems from the very beginning. It closed in 1983, reopening the following year as a harness track. This venture failed 2 years later. In 1986, the track reopened for Thoroughbred racing as Erie Downs. It closed permanently at the end of the 1987 season. The grandstand was demolished in 1999.
The site is now Phase II of the Fairview Business Park in Fairview Township, PA. The paved loop of the business park sits on top of the original 3/4 mile track. The infield, with its original pond, is now the Fairview Flag Park, which is open to the public for walking, hiking, bicyling, and dog walking.

The place we had our family reunion this weekend, Highridge, Alberta, has agricultural grounds including an old track for racing horses. It appears it has not been kept up - it is turning back into bush. I also took a picture of the final turn as the horses come off the backstretch.
