Union-made cigar label at the the Smithsonian Museum of American History.

Cigar making in the 1800s was a dirty, hard job. Workers sat at tables on backless benches. There was no air circulation, and little light. A worker had to supply his own cutting board and knife. "Strippers" tore the leaves from the plant stems (making sure not to rip the leaves). "Bunchers" laid them in pads of 50. The cigar-maker then adjusted the leaves so that all the holes in the leaves were covered up. The unuseable portion had to be cut off, and the best cigar-makers cut off only the tiniest bit of unuseable leaf. Tougher leaves were used for the wrapper. The goal was to make a perfectly shaped and rolled product.

Piece-rates varied from $16 to $22 per thousand. Women made much less than men; Asian laborers often made less than half what whites did. Cigar factories will full of the dust from the leaves, and pieces of stem and branch flew everywhere.

Management wanted as little tobacco wasted as possible, the highest-quality rolls and best wrapping, and high number of cigars made per day. Managers had the right to remove as many "imperfect" cigars as they liked -- for which workers received no wage.

Unions attempted to win higher piece-rates, limit the abuse of the "right of removal", stop sexual abuse of women and children, obtain more ventilation and better lighting, win adjustable seating, and other benefits.

Samuel Gompers was a Jew born in Great Britain in 1850. He emigrated to the United States, and as a teenager became a cigar maker. He became president of the International Cigar Makers' Union, and then co-founded the American Federation of Labor (AFL) in October 1886. He served as the AFL's president from 1886 to 1894 and again from 1895 until his death in 1924.

A critical leader in the American labor movement, he tried to stop the inter-union battles over jobs and members, promoted professional union administration, successfully advocated for the eight-hour working day, and demanded written contracts and improved collective bargaining.

Gompers disliked party politics, instead pushing for a "reward your friends, punish your enemies" strategy of political action. He fought against government-run programs such as unemployment insurance, health insurance, and pensions -- arguing that unions could administer these programs better. He also avidly supported the U.S. involvement in World War I, successfully winning a no-strike policy.

Scoliosis is a rare spinal condition in which the spine abnormally rotates and curves from side to side.

The term kyphosis is used to describe an exaggerated curvature of the spine that gives the back a rounded appearance.

Prior to becoming a Seleucid king, Demetrius I was held hostage in Rome in keeping with the terms of the Treaty of Apamaea of 188 B.C. During his detention a succession of kings ruled the Seleucid world, including Demetrius' father Seleucus IV, his uncle Antiochus IV and his young cousin Antiochus V. At a time when the Romans were punishing Antiochus V for treaty violations, Demetrius escaped captivity, raised an army and landed in Syria in the fall of 162 B.C. He found quick support, and his rival Antiochus V was soon executed, leaving Demetrius the new Seleucid king.

With all of the political intrigue unfolding in Syria, the Romans represented their interests by encouraging Timarchus, the satrap of Media (and/or Babylonia), to revolt against Demetrius. (In fact, the Romans may have merely lent their support to a revolt that already had been active since c.163/2 against Demetrius' predecessor, Antiochus V.) It is difficult to say how much progress Timarchus made, other than that he certainly captured Seleucia on the Tigris, where he struck some of his revolt coins. Upon learning of the revolt, Demetrius marched eastward early in 161; when their armies clashed in the spring, perhaps not far from Babylon, Timarchus was killed. Though the troubles of his reign were far from over, Demetrius was once again the sole Seleucid king. If the coinage of Seleucia on the Tigris is any indication, important events took place in the aftermath of the battle. The Babylonians conferred upon Demetrius the epithet Soter ('saviour') and he seems to have married his sister Laodicea, with whom he eventually had three children (two of whom, Demetrius II and Antiochus VII, would be kings). The first coins Demetrius struck at Seleucia – including this tetradrachm – were of a victorious and commemorative nature, and bore his new epithet. They appear to celebrate his marriage, as they are the only coins of his reign that portray Laodicea. The fact that so many (if not all) of these tetradrachms are overstruck on coins of Timarchus probably reflects the hurried circumstances of their production and, simultaneously, a desire to erase the memory of the rebellion.

IFFD India Runway Week, 2015

As I made my way through Opulent Hotel for the India Runway Week Season, I saw many celebs and socialites making the event glitzy and glamorous. The event was organized by Indian Federation for Fashion Development and all the 35 designers got a chance to showcase their collection here.

The first day started with ‘My Best Friend’ by Jenjum Gadi and he showcased all the bridesmaids in ravishing indo-western attires. I remember the work of Designer Masumi Mewawala, which spoke about innovation and style.

Other designers who showcased on Day 1 were Manish Patel, Vishala Shree, Megha, Varija Bajaj, Anvita Deo, Rohini Gugnani, Mukti Tibrewal and Manish Gupta. Manish Gupta’s show was spectacular with a mascot walking the ramp with a social message by PETA to avoid leather.

The second day was dedicated to the hard work of students of Fashionista, The school of Fashion Technology. The collection spoke of modern and traditional elements. Then it was Kaaisha Studio by Shalini Gupta for whose collection actress Madhurima Tuli walked the ramp. Other designers who showcased their brilliant work were Farzana Rahman, Ashfaque Ahmad, Rajdeep Ranawat, Deeksha Sharma, Surbhi Jain, Sanya Garg, Rifali Chandra, Jigar & Paneri Gosar, and Sagar Tenali

Then came the gand finale, which had celebs like Amyra Dastur, Ajaz Khan & Taapsee Pannu walking the ramp in beautiful ensembles. Designer Sameer Junaidi made actress Amyra Dastur look like a portrait of rare art and with her was the Ajaz Khan of Bigg Boss fame.

Later in the evening, actress Taapsee Pannu walked for designer Tanieya Khanuja. The collection was summery and Hawaiian like lime & neon green with mustard, peaches and white. There were backless gowns and dresses, peplum flirty frill chic tops paired with trousers. It was indeed a wearable collection. There were jackets and capes and beachwear. One particular garment, which caught my eye, was a black and white swimsuit paired with a jacket. There were red and black dresses with asymmetrical pattern. With the use of net and feathers, contrast between gold, black and beige and was very gen-x in its outlook, its sexiness and its oomph.

Showstopper Amyra was dressed in a flower vase type gown that was innovative and unique.

The designer Ambreen Khan showcased colors like maroon with black plastic sequence; very different & contemporary with ruling colors being Navy blue and black. The models danced & swirled around the chairs and kept the audience mesmerized & glued to their seats. She showcased beautiful saree gowns with full sleeve blouses that looked sophisticated, chic and sexy.

On the finale day collections by Vanica Chhabra, Govinda Raju, Neha Yadav, Sweta Kedia, Rahul Kapoor, Samyuktha, Anup Bisani, Suvagata Saha, Bani Khuranna, Akassh K Agarwal, Moet Barar & Rajni K Sethi were also showcased the received the appreciation from the fashionistas.

Avinash Pathania, Founder, IFFD said “As the IFFD team is young and we know it’s difficult for young entrepreneurs to survive. Everyone talks about youth but no one is doing anything substantial for him or her. Young Fashion Movement is one small step to give more opportunities to young talent in the field of fashion”

It was a great event. Team Shivangi Reviews looks forward to the next season.
