Market Church Hameln

The stemming from the 13th century Lutheran Market Church of St. Nicolai is after the Cathedral of St. Boniface the second oldest church of Hamelin and it forms together with the wedding house the center of the old town of Hamelin.

Historical background and construction history

The foundations of a first previous building have been found in 1957 during the reconstruction of the destroyed during WWII Market Church. These probably stem from a small single-naved, squared chapel with west tower from the first half of the 12th century. In the second half of the 12th century the chapel was converted into a three-aisled Romanesque basilica with transept, whose north- and south side with its arched windows still today have been preserved. Consecrated was the church to St. Nicholas.

After a fire of 1220/1230 was probably erected an early Gothic vaulted basilica and raised the West Tower. 1250-1260 the church then was converted into a hall church, in the process, the tower was again increased as well as the aisles extended and topped up. 1290-1310, the hall eastward has been extended by a fifth yoke and added a polygonal closed apse and a sacristy. Of these, still today the exterior walls, the eastern yokes with the apse and the western North door, the so-called bride portal, with the blessing Christ have been preserved.

After the Seven Years' War the Market Church 1764-1768 received a Baroque interior, new windows and above central and southern side aisle a gabled roof. 1899 the interior was redesigned in the neo-Gothic style. On April 5, 1945, the tower was shot to fire and fell into the nave and the neighboring Town Hall, both of which burned out.

The church was rebuilt in the years 1957-1959 according to plans of architect Eberhard G. Neumann as a basilica with a straight ceiling in central and side aisles which are supported by squared pillars. In the choir and in the two transepts the vault has been left. On the west wall was built a arcuate curved gallery on which the organ stands. On 6 December 1959, the feast of St. Nicholas, the church was solemnly consecrated. 1987 the Market church was thoroughly renovated and redesigned.

Die aus dem 13. Jahrhundert stammende evangelisch-lutherische Marktkirche St. Nicolai ist nach dem Münster St. Bonifatius, die zweitälteste Kirche Hamelns und bildet zusammen mit dem Hochzeitshaus das Zentrum der Hamelner Altstadt.

Vor- und Baugeschichte

Die Fundamente eines ersten Vorgängerbaus wurden 1957 beim Wiederaufbau der im Zweiten Weltkrieg zerstörten Marktkirche gefunden. Diese stammen wohl von einer kleinen einschiffigen, quadratischen Kapelle mit Westturm aus der ersten Hälfte des 12. Jahrhunderts. In der zweiten Hälfte des 12. Jahrhunderts wurde die Kapelle zu einer dreischiffigen romanischen Basilika mit Querhaus ausgebaut, dessen Nord - und Südseite mit seinen Rundbogenfenstern heute noch erhalten sind. Geweiht wurde die Kirche dem Hl. Nikolaus.

Nach einem Brand von 1220/1230 errichtete man wahrscheinlich eine frühgotische Gewölbebasilika und erhöhte den Westturm. 1250–1260 wurde die Kirche dann zu einer Hallenkirche umgebaut. Dabei wurde der Turm abermals aufgestockt, sowie die Seitenschiffe verlängert und erhöht. 1290–1310 wurde die Halle nach Osten um ein fünftes Joch erweitert und eine polygonal geschlossene Apsis und eine Sakristei angebaut. Davon sind heute noch die Außenwände, die östlichen Joche mit der Chorapsis und die westliche Nordtür, das sogenannte Brautportal, mit dem segnenden Christus erhalten.

Nach dem Siebenjährigen Krieg erhielt die Marktkirche 1764–1768 eine barocke Innenausstattung, neue Fenster und über Mittel- und südlichem Seitenschiff ein Satteldach. 1899 wurde das Innere neugotisch umgestaltet. Am 5. April 1945 wurde der Kirchturm in Brand geschossen und fiel in das Kirchenschiff und das benachbarte Rathaus, welche beide ausbrannten.

Die Kirche wurde in den Jahren 1957–1959 nach den Plänen des Architekten Eberhard G. Neumann als Basilika mit einer geraden Decke in Mittel- und Seitenschiffen wiederaufgebaut, welche durch quadratische Pfeiler gestützt werden. Im Chor und in den beiden Querhäusern hat man die Gewölbe belassen. An der Westwand hat man eine bogenförmig geschwungene Empore gebaut, auf der die Orgel steht. Am 6. Dezember 1959, dem Festtag des Hl. Nikolaus, wurde die Kirche feierlich eingeweiht. 1987 wurde die Marktkirche grundlegend renoviert und neugestaltet.
