90039 & 90024 working the 4M25 Mossend to Daventry pauseat Preston for a crew change on May 24 2021. 90039 carries a special vinyl livery promoting the work done by DB Cargo in keeping the country moving during the pandemic.
With GE Trip Optimizer in absolutely no hurry, 513W and mates slug their way up the East Slope of Alleghany Grade, just east of the notably isolated C&O Station name of Backbone. In the early 20th century, Backbone was fitted with a unique Octagonal Tower/Station, and an Iron Mine, one of many at the time in this part of Virginia. Today, it is a mere name of track charts and timetables.

Running about 50 mins early here, 90039 & 90024 pass Carnforth in a very lucky patch of sun with 4M25, the 07.06 Mossend - Daventry 'liner on Thurs 24th February 2022.

Ever since we moved to Alberta, I have wanted to shoot the Milky Way over the mountains. It only took a year and a half to finally getting around to get some astro shots in. Although the core of the Milky Way is below the horizon in the fall, which is when I took this picture, I do like that it is visible much earlier than during the long summer days. What better place than Moraine Lake to take my first Milky Way picture since 2020.
I had to take 3 exposures for this image. The first one for the sky and the other two is a focus stack of the mountains and foreground.

The Blackfeet have long held the belief that the Many Glacier area is the backbone of the entire world. Seems fitting to me.
The Backbone spreads out beyond the shores of Swiftcurrent Lake with Grinnell Point above the head of the lake, Mount Wilbur to the northwest, and clouds encompassing Mount Gould in the center of the photograph.
