The B36 was the first bomber built by the United States during the Cold War that had the range to get into the Soviet Union without refueling and had the room to hold the early bulkier Atomic bombs in the US arsenal at the time. Originally conceived during the second World War it didn't make it into production until after the war where 384 were built and only 4 intact planes are left in the world today. It was only in service from 1949-1959 and became obsolete when the vastly faster and more versatile and upgradeable B-52 bombers went into service in 1955.

Continuing on with the Bessemer theme that started a couple of weeks ago with a chase of the terrific trio. Here is an SD38 - SD9 combo under the PC (now CSX) arch bridge in Conneaut. The 877 would have been about a year old in this May 1974 view. I think these were the helpers on a coal train and they were putting the rear half of the train away for unloading. Compare how clean the ROW is on the PC to how it is treed in now.
