The Pope stayed here in the 1300's instead of Rome

Pont Saint-Bénézet (the real name of the Avignon Bridge!).This bridge became famous because of a child song evoking all sorts of characters dancing around the bridge. It attracts many tourists yet it only still has two chapels and four bays. In fact, the bridge, the first construction dating from the 12th century, has had a rather eventful history as it collapsed several times and after the last two times (in 1633 and 1669) it was decided not to rebuild and keep only the four bays. We only admired it from the banks of the Rhone.

petits souvenirs d'un passage rapide a Avignon...

Avignon, often referred to as the "City of Popes" because of the presence of popes and antipopes from 1309 to 1423 during the Catholic schism, it is currently the largest city and capital of the département of Vaucluse. This is one of the few French cities to have preserved its ramparts, its historic centre, the palace of the popes, Rocher des Doms, and the bridge of Avignon. It was classified a World Heritage Site by UNESCO under the criteria I, II and IV.
