Oftenly known as the City of Popes when the seat of papacy resided in Avignon from 1309 to 1377. At the beginning of the 14th century, this was a town of no great importance, but gradually underwent extensive development during the time of the seven Avignon popes and two anti-popes, from Clement V to Benedict XIII.
Great blue skies during this late winter period of February.

I showed you yesterday the wonderful Brett Whiteley painting of The Kingfisher. It was clearly influenced by one of his artistic mentors, Lloyd Rees. But perhaps by far the most important artistic influence on Whiteley was the 20th century's most prolific artist, Pablo Picasso (1881-1973).
Whiteley is well known for his signature female nudes. But in this case he is directly referencing perhaps the most important painting of the 20th century (in terms of artistic development), Picasso's Les Demoiselles d'Avignon 1907. www.moma.org/collection/works/79766
Picasso's painting tore up the rule book of Modern art and pre-figured Cubism. If you enlarge Whiteley's painting you'll see many of the key elements here, including a reference to the African masks which had featured in Picasso's work. Avignon reopened 1981 also indicated a shift in Whiteley's work towards the use of assemblage and collage on his chosen material.
