We went to Chatham Historic Boatyard at the weekend which incidentally is a truly amazing place to visit. It's expensive - £15 for an adult £12 for a child £42.50 for a family. Cor blimey I thought but in fact it represents very good value - there's so much to see, it's so well done and the whole set up is simply brilliant. Although it's not the place to go on a rainy day - long expanses of ground between buildings to get we in and it's not so easy to access the best parts. Walking through a diesel electric submarine dripping wet from rain isn't my idea of fun.
Still. This weekend there was a Scammell Club meeting at the boatyard, people who refurbish old commercial vehicles, buses, trucks, vans and so on, gather at places where there's enough space for lots of vintage vehicles to gather, do a day's exhibit of their marvellous recreations of the past, probably a rally through the countryside, then come together for a couple of hours just to let the public engage.
John bought this as a total wreck with seized engine and and rotten front wings, that had not been driven for 42 years I think he said. Behind Debbie's head in the cab there's a photo of it in the barn where it sat rotting for decades. Some achievement doing this sort of thing but what a fantastic thing to end up with after thousands of hours chopping, cutting, sawing, filling, rubbing, scraping, sanding, grinding, spraying, daubing, screwing, buffing, shining and learning new skills.
They were both sitting in the cab, smiling, so I asked them about it. John got out and explained a lot about how he came to have done it. They were out in public in their charming little Bedford truck for the first time. It hadn't had its engine running for all that time. I'd love to have that sense of satisfaction of completeness after doing a project so detailed and intense. I'd like to build a house some day.
They were very friendly and happy to let me take their picture. They said some guy had been around taking dozens of pics earlier. Dozens? Made me think my two or three shots of people is not a big enough intrusion to get a good pic. Asking people to pose - change position as I'm taking photographs is my biggest barrier to taking portraits. They changed their pose happily without any fuss. They are from Strood.
I think the dog is called Max. But I probably forgot its name. Max doesn't sound right. It was a good natured creature anyway and happily posed too.
