By day, I’m an engineer, among other things, at NASCENT Technology. NASCENT provides a number of different automation technologies to the intermodal industry (rail, marine, trucking). I just recently celebrated my 10 year mark at NASCENT, and indeed enjoy what I do.
A couple of years ago we decided to come up with a moving vehicle imaging system. Output images would be used to remotely inspect the vehicle for damage (container and chassis; we don't care about the bobtail/tractor), and OCR would be applied to those images to collect equipment IDs (chassis and container numbers). Having a photography and lighting background, among other things (structural, civil, electrical, hardware, control, network, fiber, server, super nerd, blah, blah, blah) made me the obvious choice to build such a contraption. The system is called enVision, and you’ve seen some pictures of it in my photo stream.
Today I thought I’d share a couple of the images it produces. While not the pretty pictures you’d like to see, it is indeed very cool stuff (certainly to me anyway). Linescan cameras (having just a single vertical row of pixels) are an excellent choice for imaging an object moving perpendicular to the camera (e.g. this truck), but there are some oddities with this approach (you'll see that some things look a little strange, like bottom of wheels, or lines in the background). But don't have to light such a large area.
Be sure to check out the full size image (link above). Your browser will likely shrink the image to fit, so you may have to click the image to expand it. Other enVision related photos in my photo stream: www.flickr.com/search/?user_id=33281286%40N02&view_al...

What Materials are Suitable in Automation & Robotics Industry?
Aluminum
Aluminum is one of the most widely used metals in the world, aluminum demonstrates electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity and corrosion resistance. The material is also easy to process.
Titanium
The titanium is popular in the automation & robotics industries because of its high tensile strength and excellent corrosion resistance.
Acrylic ( PMMA)
PMMA, also known as acrylic, is a type of transparent thermoplastic known for its great wear resistance and great light transmission. It also demonstrates good surface finish and strength.
PA66+ GF

A visit to Aston Hall on Saturday 16th September 2017 during Birmingham Heritage Week for the Aston Hall Siege event. I booked it online for £8.
Can the Hall hold or will it fall? See soldiers arrive to defend the Hall, and experience the story of the siege. Help the servants and soldiers as they prepare for battle, fortifying the Hall and learning to fight.
In the 1640s the country was at war with itself, King against Parliament, and in 1643 the tides of war brought battle to Aston Hall.
Can the Hall hold? Come early to follow events as they unfold!
Aston Hall Automation - saw this in the tea room, while I had a sandwich and a Mocha.

Electrical and Computer Engineering Senior Design Team at the 2015 Design Expo at Michigan Tech
Team Members: Marc Kohler, Adam Kovach, Britta Anderson,
William Gagnon, and Dong Xia, Electrical Engineering
Advisor: John Lukowski, Electrical and Computer
Engineering
Sponsor: DTE Energy
Project Overview:
Our team has three goals. The first is to develop
a password management system for an intelligent
electronic device (IED) that will work across multiple
vendors. Second, we will create a universal
program that can manipulate (upload, download,
edit) configured IED description (CID) files. Third,
we will also research incorporating the IEC 61850
protocol within traditional bus protection schemes.
