Worthy of note is the GWR Autocoach just behind the loco.

Crossing over Thomason Foss, Electric Autocar No.3170 and Autocoach No.3453 are seen running on North Eastern Railway metals for the first time in preservation.

Back in pre-grouping days, the Autocar would never have run with a coach, let alone an Autocoach, which would have only been hauled by BTP 0-4-4's. It was only during LNER times that a larger engine was fitted, making it powerful enough to haul more than itself. However, in the absence of any preserved BTP's, the sole surviving Autocoach pairs very nicely with 3170.

What a delight it was to see these two unique survivors running on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway it was.

An evening photo charter back in October 2018 at Shackerstone on the Battlefield Line. 6412 and this autocoach were two of the visitors for the Autumn Steam Gala, seen here in the platform next to the main station building. I remember the sound of the wind blowing through the trees, a very peaceful location deep in rural Leicestershire as anyone who has visited (and maybe got lost on the way there) can attest to. The beautifully restored unique 1903 NER Autocar No 3170 with autocoach No 3453 in tow catches the morning light at Greenend whilst on a visit to the NYMR. The shadows were creeping up the line as the sun moved more to the left behind a copse of trees. Thankfully 3170 left on time and just squeezed into the gap perfectly to catch the lovely light.

The autocar was unlikely to have ever hauled an autocoach before it was withdrawn. Certainly not during pre grouping days when the petrol engine was only powerful enough to propel the autocar itself. The clerestory autocoach would have been paired with a BTP tank (LNER G6) locomotive.

The ancestor of the modern DMU. The 1903 build North Eastern Railway petrol railcar, number 3170, was an early railway innovation for the North Eastern Railway, looking for alternatives to steam traction on shorter and more lightly uses lines.

No. 3170 was withdrawn from service as far back as 1931 with the body surviving as a holiday home for 70 years or so before being restored by a team based at the Embsay and Bolton Abbey railway.

The railcar and it's autocoach partner are visiting the Weardale Railway during February and March 2026. The pair are seen here between Wolsingham and Frosterley with a Stanhope bound service on the 28th February 2026.

Iconic LMS loco Royal Scot leads a correctly livered set of Mark one rolling stock past the great bracket signals at Bewdley south. Unfortunately an autocoach had been parked in front of this classic location all weekend but was moved on Sunday morning to provide extra accommodation. This was the only chance to get this shot in sun for the whole gala. Ten minutes later the sun left for the rest of the day.

The GWR Autocoach (or auto-trailer) is a type of coach that was used by the Great Western Railway for push-pull trains powered by a steam locomotive. The distinguishing design feature of an autocoach is the driving cab at one end, allowing the driver to control the train without needing to be located in the cab of the steam locomotive. This eliminates the need to run the engine round to the other end of the coach at the end of each journey.

When one or more autocoaches are connected to a suitably equipped steam locomotive, the combination is known as an auto-train, or, historically, a railmotor train. A steam locomotive provided with the equipment to be used as an autotrain is said to be auto-fitted.

The autocoach was used by the Great Western Railway on small branch lines allowing the loco to work in both directions while staying connected to the carriage at one end only.

Working in the 'reverse' direction the driver is in a small compartment at the far end of the carriage with his controls, only the fireman remained on the footplate.
