Packed to the gunwales with enthusiasts, former Great Western Railway 0-6-0 Pannier Tank No. 6430 with the Autocoach works the Kidderminster to Bewdley shuttle during Severn Valley Railway’s Spring Steam Gala on 17th March 2019. No. 6430 worked Autotrains in the South Wales valleys from 1940 until 1954, being based at Pontypool and Newport during this period.

The GWR Autocoach (or auto-trailer) is a type of coach that was used by the Great Western Railway for push-pull trains powered by a steam locomotive. The distinguishing design feature of an autocoach is the driving cab at one end, allowing the driver to control the train without needing to be located in the cab of the steam locomotive. This eliminates the need to run the engine round to the other end of the coach at the end of each journey.

When one or more autocoaches are connected to a suitably equipped steam locomotive, the combination is known as an auto-train, or, historically, a railmotor train. A steam locomotive provided with the equipment to be used as an autotrain is said to be auto-fitted.

Collet 1400 class 0-4-2T steam locomotive No. 1450 is sandwiched between two auto-coaches as it approaches Bewdley Tunnel during Severn Valley Railway’s autumn steam gala on 19th September 2019.

Autotrains were commonly used by the Great Western Railway on lightly used branch lines and could be driven from the locomotive in one direction and from the autocoach (or auto-trailer) in the other, to save the engine having to change ends of the train for the journey back.

1450 and its autocoach arrive at Bridgnorth, passing 75069 which is waiting to leave for Kidderminster.

Late night at Staverton

A cold winters evening roughly around 1957, With the branch to close in 1958 we see 14xx 1450 resting at Staverton on a autocoach working. These little locos were one of a few that proved to be the mainstay of the fleet, along with panniers and small prairies.

In reality we see 1450 on loan from the SVR at the Sourh Devon Railway, Staverton has been superbly preserved, and is a real credit to all envolved. Yet another superb day from the gents at Timeline Events

:)

A real novelty vehicle of considerable vintage, North Eastern Railcar autocar 3170, appearing courtesy of the N.E.R. 1903 Electric Autocar Trust.

Originally built in 1903 as a petrol-electric railcar, this unique vehicle has been beautifully restored and is now diesel-electric.

It proved to be a very popular attraction over the weekend and was full to capacity on every trip it made.

A late afternoon auto train from Princes Risborough to Chinnor drifts serenely by as the batsmen hesitate over the possibilty of a risky single to square leg.

One of the very best locations on any preserved line in the British Isles is the curve at Garthydwr in the glorious Dee Valley.

Down by the River

1450 glides along the South Devon Railway during the Timeline Events charter last Tuesday. A perfect combo for the line, and one i've been waiting a while for, thanks to everyone that made this possible, even the sun came out all day for us, you dont get much better then that!

All the best

Matt

Taken a few years back on the South Devon Railway, Collett Goods 3205 is seen during a Timeline Event photocharter. A superb two days in Devon, for one of my favourite locos. Soon be returning for 1450 on an autocoach, if we can get light like this it would superb :)

a view from january 2007 , pannier 6430 leaves carrog with an auto train

not sure when we shall be able to see this sight here again as 6430 and at least one autocoach have now gone elsewhere

Perfectly reproducing a lost era, GWR 14xx 0-4-2T No. 1450 leaves Arley with auto-coach W238W working the 10:50am service from Highley to Kidderminster on 1 March, 2026.

A classic branch line scene as GWR 14XX Class 0-4-2 1450 and its auto-coach cross the River Severn during a 30742 Charters photographic day.

GWR Collett 0-4-2T 1420 crosses the River Dart near Buckfastleigh on 13-3-99.

I have always thought of this railway as being the Dart Valley Railway harking back to my visits in the 1970's. In 1989 the line came under review as a going concern and the new company The South Devon Railway began operating services from 1st January 1991.

This is a well known location which I haven't visited for many years. The lack of photos that I could find of this view suggests that nature has become more of a challenge. Even in 1999 a one coach train hardly fitted in the gap between the trees.
