Visitors to the Locomotive Shed at Loughborough Central have often wondered what is the vehicle in the shed that looks neither like a steam or diesel locomotive. It is in fact the underframe of a North Eastern Railway Petrol-Electric autocar originally built in 1903 at York Works and believed to be the world's first internal combustion engine powered passenger train. It ran on various branch lines in the North East until 1930. The body of the car was then used as a holiday home but the underframe and bogies were scrapped. In 2003 the NER 1903 Autocar Trust set about bring the vehicle back to life.
