Iβve been living in Austin a little over 2 years now, but today was my first time watching bats take off the Congress Avenue bridge. It was simply mesmerizing!! If youβve seen an image of Austin with bats, this is the reason. :)
A little background on the ATX bat cave & bat colony: After a renovation of the bridge in the 1980s, it became an ideal habitat for bats as a cave. This attracted migrating Mexican free-tailed bats to form a colony and the numbers have grown over the years. From March to October, you can see around 1.5 million bats take off from narrow crevices in the underside of the bridge right after sunset. This is the largest urban bat colony in the world!

Cloudy sunrise behind the skyline of downtown Austin, Texas on Lady Bird Lake. My absolute favorite place to photograph Austin, especially during the cooler months when almost nobody is around early in the morning.
I witnessed the creation of this new 100-foot-tall monumental mural sitting in downtown Austin from my office and always wondered what it meant.
This Sandra Chevrier and Shepard Faireyβs mural is a tribute to the 19th Amendment of the US constitution, which gave women the right to vote 100 years ago. This is a symbol of the hardships that women went through for just being born as a woman, and how they fought for their freedom - a token of feminism!

Austinites who enjoy the playground of Lady Bird Lake often rest beneath Lamar Bridge to escape the hot Texas sun in August. From here, they have great views of the Austin skyline and the waterway in both directions.
