Livestock auctions are one of England's oldest surviving traditions. For about as long as this island's shores have supported populations of cattle, communities of farmers have congregated in local auction marts like this one in order to exchange livestock. The country's farming industry is something of a diverse tapestry - great swathes of rural landscape across England belong to such landowners, with smallholdings of every shape and size contributing to the economy today as they have done for hundreds of years.
There's a truly vibrant atmosphere at these local events and a real sense of community. Many of the farmers bringing livestock to the market use it as a place to connect with other rural businessmen throughout the region and the trading floor is always abuzz with gossip. This photograph was taken during a cattle sale at the Wharfedale Farmers Auction Mart, an establishment which has been a firm fixture in Otley for over a hundred years since its inception on February 14th, 1893.

(Joyner Fall Auction of Important Canadian Art - November 25th, 1987)
Provenance: Acquired from the artist Laing Galleries, Toronto
Exhibited: Annual Exhibition Royal Canadian Academy, 1920, no. 158 Arthur Lismer Paintings,
1913-1949, The Art Gallery of Toronto, Toronto. January-February, 1950, no. 6. Also
shown at: The National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, March, 1950; The Montreal
Museum of Fine Arts, June, 1950. Paintings and Drawings by Arthur Lismer, Laing
Galleries, Toronto, May-June, 1956. Eleven Artists in Montreal, The Montreal
Museum of Fine Arts, Montreal, 1960.
Literature: Gemey Kelly, Arthur Lismer, Nova Scotia, 1916-1919, Halifax, N.S., plate 29 for
anther work entitled Logging, 1920.
Gemey writes, “In the spring, the Sackville River, which flowed by the Lismer home, was the scene of logging operations when the logs were sent down the river and caught in booms at the head of Bedford Basin. Lismer enjoyed the sight of the raging water and of the loggers clambering to untangle the jams, and in the several drawings and oil sketches he captured the action of moving water and the precariousness of the balanced loggers working with the poles. Lismer attempted to incorporate the various elements of the scene, including the crossed and askewed logs, into the design of the whole.”
Offered as part of the Estate of Lawrence T. Porter, Logging In Nova Scotia set a new auction record for work by Arthur Lismer. The painting remains to this day the third-highest value fetched for a work by the Group of Seven artist at auction.
The consignment of the Estate of Lawrence T. Porter marked an impressive coup. At the time, the Porter Collection was considered the most significant ever to be offered at auction and Joyner Fine Art, an operation of three specialists had secured it from the other giants in the industry. The offering of the Porter Collection on the auction block in November of 1987 helped Joyner Fine Art realize just over $5 million in the fall season, a staggering new record for any auction of Canadian Art. Most importantly, Joyner Fine Art had become the leading firm of Canadian Art auctioneers within two years of its formation.

About every Saturday there is an auction at the old Gilbert's warehouse or at the fairgrounds. Aways feels a bit strange to me. A person or couple's possessions laid out in cardboard boxes. A lifetime of stuff they used, treasured or forgot they had.
