Gemma's getting increasingly more skilled at editing and customizing her avatars. Today she mentioned she had no attachment slots left for a tail, and so I looked her avatar over. her OCA backpack was covered in a few trinkets she'd added, so they were taking up three extra slots.
I had her rez the objects, and link them together, and make sure to select the backpack last to keep it as the root. Now she's got two extra slots, since 4 items became one, and she could add herself a tail.

Today, in advanced biology/human anatomy class we watched a news thing on this man who was half tree and half human. His name was Dede. He had "bark" growing on his skin, mostly around his feet/legs and arms/hands. His hands and feet were completely covered and enlarged with roots and bark and what-not. Apparently it was some sort of rare wart virus thing causing the skin disease. It's kind of gross, sadly, but if you want, you can see a photo of him here.
Anyway, it kind of inspired me to do this. Joel Robison also inspired the creation of this photo. You should definitely check out his photostream if you haven't.

Recently, I’ve been exploring the idea of expressing visual ideas through notation. I’ve done several experiments, most of which have caused giant headaches, sleep deprivation, and persistent grumpiness. However, in working on this exhibit, I was able to cobble together a group of notated steps, or a composition, that provides a nice balance of constraints and freedoms, and forced me to take risks and improvise in order to find new ways to construct images. I’m calling this composition Spooky Action! Almost everything in this exhibit was made by repeating this fairly simple composition over and over, countless times.
The result, is a very loose narrative showing a struggle between representational and non-representational art. Maybe you’ll take something away from experiencing this exhibit, maybe not. I do hope some of the energy I put into this work makes you feel something.

I needed a change in scenery this weekend, so took the dogs for a little drive to town for our walk and we parked at the Folsom Powerhouse. As we came up from the trail, I noticed the Powerhouse was actually open, so we strolled over to take a peek inside the building as I had never been in it before. Even though I had my 3 dogs with me, the State Parks volunteer docent told me to come in and bring the dogs. He was the nicest gentleman and gave me a private tour of the Powerhouse and explained how it all worked.
The knobs and connectors you see here are part of the original Powerhouse that provided electricity for the surrounding area from 1895 to the 1950s.
From Wikipedia: A diversion canal took water from the American River to four 8-foot-tall (2.4 m), 750-kilowatt generators that were manufactured by the General Electric Company via four 8-foot-diameter (2.4 m) penstocks. Only two of the four generators were operating on July 13, 1895 when the powerhouse provided the first electricity to Sacramento via 22 miles (35 km) of transmission lines, making it the first place in the United States to transmit long-distance hydroelectric power. On September 9, 1895 the new power provided by the powerhouse resulted in a "Grand Electric Carnival" celebration by decorating the state capital with thousands of light bulbs.
The head of the Egyptian goddess Mut, the god Amun's consort, was made as an attachment for something else, perhaps a piece of processional equipment or a large ritual vessel. The goddess wears her usual double crown, whose colors have been alluded to with precious metals: the lower element of the crown, traditionally red, is here covered in gold leaf, as the Egyptians associated gold with that color; the crown's traditionally white upper element is covered with electrum leaf, paler in hue and presumably intended to signify white.
Mut was an ancient Egyptian mother goddess known as the "World-Mother" and the "Eye of Ra," often depicted as a woman with a vulture headdress or a lioness head, symbolizing her maternal and protective powers. Her name means "mother" in the ancient Egyptian language. As part of the Theban Triad with her consort Amun-Ra and their son Khonsu, she was a key figure in the Egyptian pantheon, especially in the city of Thebes. In art, Mut was usually depicted as a woman wearing the double crown of the kings of Egypt, representing her power over the whole of the land.
