This fountain acts as an interactive poetry machine from which emerge, fragment by fragment, poems by the celebrated Mexican writer Octavio Paz (1914-1998(, who was also the artist's uncle. The poems quoted all involve language: the way we see the world through words, and the way words reflect our own image back to us. Our experience of language is always deeply felt, the poems seem to say, implying the visible as much as the tactile and audible, as well as the passage of time. The work suggests that words materialize in the air, carried by the breath of those who speak them, then dissolve or remain mysteriously lodged there and are physically incorporated by those who hear or read them. These metaphors also appear in other works in the exhibition, such as Airborne Newscast, 2013, Vicious Circular Breathing, 2013, Babbage Nanopamphlets, 2015, and Volute 1: Vicous.

My world watch me from the puddle
of my memory. Syllables of water
shine in a grove of reflections
stranded clouds, bubbles above a bottom
that changes from gold to rust.
Rippling shadows, flashes, echoes,
the writing not of signs, but of murmurs.
My eyes are thirsty. The puddle is Stoic:
the water is for reading, not drinking.
In the sun of the high plains the puddles evaporate.
Only some faithless dust remains,
and a few intestate relics.

Geysers are hot springs that episodically erupt columns of water. They occur in few places on Earth. The highest concentration of geysers anywhere is at the Yellowstone Hotspot Volcano (northwestern Wyoming, USA).
Atomizer Geyser consists of two adjacent geyserite cones located 52 meters west-southwest of the center of Artemisia Geyser’s pool in the Cascade Group of Yellowstone’s Upper Geyser Basin. Atomizer has minor and major eruptions. Minor eruptions are about half-a-minute to a little over one minute in duration and consist of a relatively slender, slightly angled column of water issuing from Atomizer’s western cone. Minors occur in series, and intervals between individual eruptions shorten as a major eruption is approached. Between most minors, Atomizer’s western vent has episodic filling-overflowing-draining events.
A major eruption occurs about 8 to 13 minutes after the beginning of the last minor eruption in a series. Between the last minor and a major, frequent low splashing occurs in the western vent. Major eruptions are longer in duration than minors and include steaming and some water issuing from the eastern vent, as well as spouting from the western vent. During major eruptions, Atomizer’s western vent alternates between water-dominated spouting and forceful steam emissions, the latter sometimes accompanied by chugging sounds.
This is the tail end of an Atomizer Geyser major eruption during the afternoon of 12 August 2015.
Atomizer Geyser is located in the Cascade Group of Yellowstone's Upper Geyser Basin, just west of Artemisia Geyser. Atomizer consists of two geyserite cones. The larger and more active of the two is the southwestern cone (= left, back cone in the above photo).
Atomizer Geyser experiences minor eruptions and major eruptions. Minors involve water spouting from the southwestern vent only. A series of three to five minors will occur before a major eruption. Each minor eruption lasts about 30 seconds to 1 minute. Intervals between minor eruptions range from about 1.5 hours to over 3 hours. The duration of each minor eruption in a series increases, while the interval between minors in a series decreases. Major eruptions usually occur only 8 to 14 minutes after the last minor eruption. Between the last minor and the major, the southwestern cone will undergo frequent spitting and low spouting from a water-filled vent.
Major eruptions of Atomizer Geyser involve both vents. The southwestern vent spews a fairly tall column of water, as if it's experiencing a minor eruption, but majors last well over 1 minute long. Steam and spray is also emitted from the smaller, northeastern vent (= right, front cone in the above photo) during a major eruption.
The major eruption shown above occurred from mid-3:48 to 4:00 PM on 12 August 2015. A minor eruption occurred before this, from 3:35 to 3:36 PM. Between the minor and major eruptions, the southwestern cone experienced frequent spitting/low splashing. The major eruption finished at 4:00 PM (= no more ejected water after that). Forced, hissing steaming continued until 4:04, with a pause at 4:03. Brief hissing occurred at 4:05 and at 4:06. Slightly forced steaming from the southwestern vent occurred at 4:06. The northeastern vent was in passive steaming at 4:06. The southwestern vent was passively steaming at 4:13, with barely forced steaming at 4:14, and passive steaming only at 4:15 PM onward.
