This was a real pain to get right. Lesson learned: Keep the holes on the "T" open, don't run the wire or solder through there - those are for airflow.
If you heat up the whole metal piece by itself first, then you can get a nice solder joint with the wiring on the top.
I learned this the hard way by soldering wire through the holes, then wondering why I couldn't move any air through the contraption afterward. It was a PITA to get all that solder out after the fact.
