Atari was bred on the (in)famous King Farm Thoroughbred production line, used/exploited for a couple of years on the track, dismissed to a variety of "owners," ending up at the Valley Forge Military Academy in PA. There, he paraded, competed in eventing, and was beaten up badly in polo.
After his "service" to the "Academy," he was set to be auctioned off for slaughter (Europeans and Asians still eat quite a bit of horse meat) when the Ranger Foundation stepped in and adopted him. He now resides at the Ranger Foundation, on Greenbriar farm, near Sharpsburg, Maryland, where for the first time in his life (he's 34 rising), he can be a horse: roaming the huge pastures, playing with his herd mates, and doing what he damn well pleases. Long live Atari!

From my collection of games consoles, shot for a presentation I'm giving at work on virtual worlds and serious games.
I bought this when it was a brand new machine nearly thirty years ago, and it still works!

My Atari 7800 with its board exposed. The brown board is a custom modification I added that provides S-video and RCA audio outputs. The video looks far superior to the RF output on my TV, even for 2600 games, and high frequencies in the audio come through much better. On my new Dell LCD that has S-video input, it looks pretty bad with vertical lines where there should be a solid field of the same color. Guess I'll just have to keep a real TV.
The Atari 2600 (or Atari VCS before 1982) is a home video game console by Atari, Inc. Released on September 11, 1977, it is credited with popularizing the use of microprocessor-based hardware and ROM cartridges containing game code.

Atari, on the right, a retired Thoroughbred racer, enjoys being with Big Tom in their pasture. Occasionally, he seeks comfort through touch.
