Situated close to Monaco, lies the very attractive and picturesque medieval village of Eze.
Eze is perched like an “eagle’s nest” on a superb cliff located 427m above sea level which enables the village and its light ochre church (Notre Dame de l’Assomption built in 1764) to be seen from afar.
It was during his stay on the Côte d’Azur that Frédéric Nietzsche discovered the village which later inspired him to compose the last part of his work “Thus Spoke Zarathustra”.

Twelve canons were to pray there day and night for the salvation of his soul and his relatives. In exchange, they could collect tithes, cultivate vines and use the wood of the forest for heating. Mainly Romanesque and Gothic, it was classified a French National historical monument in 1913. It contains stained glass windows and stalls that are also classified.

C'est l'église paroissiale vouée au culte catholique dans la commune d'Arbrissel en Ille-et-Vilaine. Elle est inscrite MH depuis 1987. Dès la fin du 9e siècle, il est fait mention d'une église paroissiale à Arbrissel. À la fin du 11Ie siècle, l'église est donnée comme prieuré à l'abbaye de la Roë par Robert d´Arbrissel, fondateur de l´abbaye royale de Fontevraud et natif de la paroisse. Elle redevient paroissiale après la Révolution française. Church Our-Lady-of-the-Assumption of Arbrissel
It is the parish church dedicated to Catholic worship in the commune of Arbrissel in Ille-et-Vilaine, Brittany, France. It has been listed as MH (historic monument, French National Heritage) since 1987. At the end of the 9th century, mention was made of a parish church in Arbrissel. At the end of the 11th century, the church was given as a priory to the abbey of La Roë by Robert d Arbrissel, founder of the royal abbey of Fontevraud and native of the parish. It became a parish again after the French Revolution. The church as we can see it today was built in the 11th and 12th centuries and partly rebuilt in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries.

Photo : La chapelle de Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption du Plan d’Aragnouet est connue comme la chapelle des templiers, mais à tort, car elle a été construite par les Hospitaliers de Saint-Jean au XIIème siècle à côté d’un hôpital pour accueillir les voyageurs et pèlerins qui franchissaient les cols Pyrénées.
Nota : La malédiction du grand-maître allait s'avérer exacte: Clément V meurt le 20 avril 1314 d'étouffement. Philippe le Bel décède dans la nuit du 26 au 27 novembre 1314 d'un ictus cérébral; ses trois fils mourront dans les 12 années à venir, sans laisser de descendance mâle, mettant ainsi fin à la lignée des Capétiens directs.

the church of which in recent decades has also been the cathedral of the Mission de France, otherwise the Territorial Prelature of Pontigny (French: Cathédrale-abbatiale de Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption à Pontigny), was a Cistercian monastery located in Pontigny on the River Serein, in the present diocese of Sens and department of Yonne, Burgundy, France. Founded in 1114, it was the second of the four great daughter houses of Cîteaux Abbey. It was suppressed in 1791 in the French Revolution and destroyed except for the church. In 1843 it was re-founded as a community of the Fathers of St. Edmund. In 1909 it passed into private ownership. In 1941 it became the mother house of the Mission de France, a territorial prelature.

The church shows both a lot of Romanesque and Gothic features (dating from 11th to 13th century), the exterior being very Romanesque and the interior showing signs of later redecorations in the Gothic style.
Today the church is a very popular tourist destination - because this is the church where the paratrooper John Steele got caught in the tower with his parachute during the D-Day landings, and spent some time dangling there (an ordeal he actually survived). Nowadays he is replaced be a dummy - to the great joy of tourists.
