The light on this day had been beautiful up until this point. There was a perfect cloud cover that made for excellent portraits. However time was not on our side (myself and the subject, Morgan) so I had to make the best with what I had. I had tried several different ways to show Morgan with her countless barn cats but with little success due to the lack of cooperation on the cats' parts. Thus I decided to place Morgan in front of all of her immobile cats to depict just how many she has (this isn't even half). She just so happened to pose like this, but I did have her adjust her head slightly to give an air of confidence. I think the harsh shadows of the afternoon sun work in this photo because overall the photo is full of contrast (greens and browns on the ground, colors of cats, blue of her jacket against brown of barn).
I chose to re-shoot this photo because I thought I could do a better job depicting a great depth of field. I feel that this photo does because there is nothing in the image that is not in focus. Even the barn doors in the far left of the frame are in focus, despite their distance from the subject. I also felt that this image better depicts passive edges than in the last assignment. I increased the contrast in the image, added a hint of sharpening to bring out the detail, and cropped the image slightly.
The Metaphor; The Equivalent

This week's assignment asked us to approach photography with the intention of forming metaphors. The idea is that photographs can have a meaning beyond what is represented in an image; in other words, they should provoke some sort of feeling. Prof recommended we look for "moody" lighting -- bright light with long, deep shadows; misty or foggy days; the dramatic lighting at sunrise or sunset.
Here are the 4 photographs I submitted. I really felt like I was stabbing around in the dark, so I just did my best.
I saw this early in the assignment week as I was walking down Main Street. Notice the brown paper bag head. Prof liked: yellow of blockade, shadows with the melting streaks... he really didn't give mine much time this week, because I was last.
The Rue Des Consuls, where Zakaria used to own an old carpet shop, is home to Rabat's Tahti Market. The market is a major tourist attraction for travelers who wish to bring home Arab or Berber wares including leather shoes, custom woodwork and carpets.
Assignment 1
The above shot was taken with a Motorola KRZR K1m. The first shots I took were with normal color settings, but I thought the image looked much more interesting with the color set to negative.
This shot was a bit serendipitous - I was sitting at my computer thinking about potential "reflection" shots when I noticed one right in front of me. It's not my favorite shot, but it so caught me by surprise and it's a little different, so I had to take it. It was also a little challenging as I had to get the angle just right - this is a reflection of my backyard, off a mirror behind me and, finally, onto my iMac logo. This was also a reminder of how differently our eyes and cameras work. I could easily see both the logo (a few inches away) and the reflection (~ 30 feet away) in pretty sharp focus. The camera not so much. I had to stop down the aperture as much as possible to create as large a depth of field as possible.
One of my 1st assignments for the class was to make a photogram. In film photography, making a photogram means placing objects on the light-sensitive paper and then exposing it for some time to leave behind some kind of image. In the digital age, you throw some stuff on a scanner and manipulate it in Photoshop. :p
I took this of the Pioneer Center downtown Reno. I cropped it so that it was just the pattern. I changed it in Lightroom to make it pop more and look metallic by doing -64 black lessening the exposure and adding a little contrast and white. I thought the first image was good but when I played with it in LR I liked how it bronzed it up.
