Autumn season in the Colorado Rocky Mountains is such a fantastic time of year to be in the state. The weather is perfect and you get beautiful views of colorful aspen forest like this. This was taken in The Poudre Canyon Near Cameron Pass, Jackson / Larimer counties. Hope you enjoy.

I'm sure life on this ranch is not as idyllic as it looks, but the place still qualifies as one of the prettiest spots in America. The peaks of the Grand Teton rise over the forest behind the buildings. I would imagine the the grazing horse sees a lot of moose, elk and other wildlife sharing his grass.
The tallest crag is Grand Teton for which the park is names. All the peaks together make up the Teton range.
Folks may find it interesting to know that the range was named by lonely French trappers who were missing a woman. The peaks reminded them a a woman's breast. They called the mountains “Les Trois Tetons,” or “The Three Breasts.” The Grand Teton—the tallest of the three—literally means “the big tit," pardon my French.
My coworker Ana and I spent about a week photographing the fall colors in Colorado. After photographing sunrise in Breckenridge we set off for Crusted Butte, by way of a small city called Gunnison. Although we had seen some fall colors near Breckenridge it wasn't until this drive that the colors started to go crazy.
After a grocery stop in Gunnison we took off up Ohio Creek pass. The views of the trees, river basin and trees was breathtaking. We stopped so often that the hour long drive started turning into a multi-hour trip.
Most of the drive was fairly open, with views of the entire valley basin but eventually we came upon a beautiful grove of Aspen trees that walled us into a little forest. Clouds had come out, bathing the trees with beautiful soft light. When I saw the light hitting the sides of these Aspens, with the orange and yellow ferns below I pulled over and snapped a bunch of photos.

I really liked the color variety in this small group of aspens along Bishop Creek (you can see a landscape shot of these trees and the creek farther back in my stream), and the way the leaves looked together in this close-up detail reminded me of a Seurat painting.
Every once in awhile, the photographer allows herself to be photographed. I'm not gonna lie, the whole time we were taking the shots, I was terrified a grizzly bear or elk was gonna come rampaging by....but we survived.
Only three miles from the road (and a pretty good climb), but once I got over the first pass everyone disappeared. Had this playground to myself for the day!
Aspen trees: Saw a bunch of these types of trees on the way to Porcupine Mountains State Park in Michigan.

My friend and I decided a few days ago that we both needed a tiny break from our usual photography subjects to go find some color in one of the most beautiful places on Earth. The weather was perfect and so were the two days we spent taking as many pictures as we could :) This place is a MUST visit!!!
A wonderful backroad crosses Kebler Pass at 10,007 ft. elevation, between Somerset to the north and Crested Butte to the south. The pass is one of Colorado's most renowned areas for autumn color, and I was here at a pretty ideal time, on September 26, 1993.

I think this is one of my favorite fall mountain biking photos, ever. I took it a couple of weeks ago on a high-altitude trail that's already buried in snow. With another storm coming in tonight and the high passes already closed, we won't be riding up there again until next summer. Fall mountain biking is the best. It's a short window in the mountains but it's wonderful while it lasts.
This Colorado mountain panorama depicts storm clouds lifting revealing a fresh snow on East Beckwith Mountain along with colorful gold, yellow, and orange aspens in the foreground.
There are always a couple locations that we photographers hold close to our hearts, and this hidden Sierra Nevada gem, called Parker Lake, has been close to mine for quite a while. I first came across this gorgeous place about 3 years ago, but at the time I didn't even bring a stinking camera! So, this time I returned for my inevitable revenge! :D
This year's hike began under one of the clearest night skies I had ever seen, and after scarfing down a granola bar and putting on my pink gloves I was well on my way! Fortunately I was able to get there well before sunrise and as a reward I got to witness dozens of wood ducks flying in and watched some wild trout action as they jumped all over the place for their breakfast. All in all it was just like it was 3 years ago. It was just..... majestic.

After shooting pre dawn here and sunrise in Rush Creek, I stopped to nab a shot on the the rocky shoreline of Silver Lake. At this point there was a big crowd on main beach there...why not walk a little further for a different comp?? Hope you enjoy, let me know what you think.

Autumn in Beaver Pond of Lundy Canyon in Eastern Sierra 2023
This was shooting at the same spot of very famous frame composition of Lundy Lake, flic.kr/p/2jXxQ3B.
Very sad to find out the left side Aspen tree had fallen down permanently when I paid the visit this year. That famous frame composition of fall colors in Lundy Lake, one of the best fall colors composition in Eastern Sierra is no longer exist.
I decided to try a little in-camera artistry with this aspen shot. I moved the camera vertically during a long exposure to get this effect, and then softened it slightly in Lightroom by cranking down the clarity slider by about 20%.
This is a whole new thing for me, so I'd love any feedback you care to offer.
Update 12/14/2010: I just learned that this is one of two of my images that were selected for the Yosemite Renaissance 26 Exhibition, and I'm thrilled and honored.

California grew out of the Gold Rush in 1849. Most of that gold is gone now, but each Fall Mother Nature paints her hills with that wonderful color.
This scene was found in Rock Creek Canyon, just south of Mammoth Lakes in the Sierra Nevada.
I think it's called hoarfrost that made the branches of these aspen trees sparkle when backlit by the rising Sun. The temp in this part of central Oregon was -6 F on this New Year's morning.
I think this photo nicely illustrates the cooperation of individual trees in a forest. Rather than ruthlessly compete for light, each tree seems to occupy a discrete space, allowing all to survive. Some research even indicates that trees share nutrients with each other through their roots. Damn socialists!

A full array of color along the shores of North Lake, in Bishop Creek Canyon. I am glad I made a trip into the canyon when I arrived yesterday, as it was pretty much calm...unlike all day today with 20-40MPH winds! I was drawn to these reflections as I scouted out my sunrise comp for the next morning, so I put on the telephoto and found some nice leading lines from the reflections zoomed in tight. I also managed to capture some nice pre dawn light and alpenglow at North Lake this morning with long exposures (will share those soon), but that was it for the day! Too much wind to photograph anything....but the sights were beautiful and I got a good day hike in.
I would say that next week will be absolutely prime for peak color in this area. Driving up Bishop Canyon, there are still tons of lime green Aspen, but the upper reaches are already peaking and the canyon walls along the mountainside are bright yellow and orange. I also drove up Rock Creek Canyon today and the upper elevations were absolutely on fire, including Rock Creek Lake. Hope you enjoy this one, let me know what you think!
