La triangulation des relations de l’enfant, poussée par la maturation sexuelle, apporte avec elle des sentiments intenses de rivalité avec l’un ou l’autre parent, lesquels ont été décrits depuis longtemps. Bien qu’il se soit centré sur le complexe de castration, Freud (1913, 1926) déclare que la période œdipienne est un conflit lié à l’ambivalence. Ceci est vrai tant du garçon que de la fille. Le parent de l’autre sexe, ressenti comme le rival pour le parent maintenant préféré sur un mode sexuel, devient plus ou moins haï. Puisque que ce parent est également profondément aimé, l’enfant réalise alors un «second conflit d’ambivalence».

Quatre milliards en 1970. Sept milliards aujourd'hui.En l'espace d'une vie, une personne née dans les années 1930 a donc vu la population passer de 2 milliards à 7 milliards ! Au cours du XXe siècle, la consommation d'énergie a été multipliée par 10, l'extraction de minéraux industriels par 27 et celle de matériaux de construction par 34. L'échelle et la vitesse des changements que nous provoquons sont sans précédents dans l'histoire.
