Our pasta course. Again, they split it for us, so this was my plate.

Artisanal spaghetti, hard clams, candied lemon and summer truffle

There was a nice subtle acid with the candied lemons, which went nicely with the clams. Sadly, I don't remember much more than that about the flavors, though.

This is a detail from the fountain. I was going to take a picture of the little butcher guy, but it did seem a bit gory.

Local artisans who built Luiza's new house. Luiza, a single mother of three, lost her home to Cyclone Idai. "I was home with my children when the wind started. I grabbed them and run to the neighbors. The house collapsed behind us, we could not take anything , our dishes, our cloths ... here was nothing left,” she remembers. "Everything fell". Maria, one of the local astisans who built Luiza's house, used to work as a domestic helper, but today, she stands among construction materials, mixing cement, measuring sand, and climbing scaffolding. "I say it’s a miracle," she says, as she recalls her journey into the male-dominated field of construction. Her transition wasn’t easy; at first, even her own mother doubted she could handle such "men’s work." But Maria remained determined, reminding her family, "It’s not just men’s work, women can do it too."The Government of Mozambique, through GREPOC and World Bank funding, has tasked IOM with implementing the "Recovery of Housing " project, aimed at assisting 6,682 vulnerable families in the city of Beira, Sofala province. In coordination with UN-Habitat and the Beira Municipality, this initiative helps communities affected by Cyclone Idai and subsequent cyclones and floods since 2019 to rebuild their homes using stronger, more durable materials.

Local artisans are trained in resilient construction techniques, ensuring homes are better prepared for future climate shocks. The project emphasizes community involvement by providing essential materials and technical support, while also building local capacity for long-term recovery. By reinforcing homes and empowering artisans, the initiative fosters sustainable recovery and strengthens the resilience of Beira’s most vulnerable communities.

Having learned how to mix cement from her father and the basics of construction through the on the working training facilitated by IOM, Maria adapted quickly, taking pride in her newfound skills. "When I got here, I just asked for a little guidance, and soon I could work on my own," she recalls. Her favorite part? "Launching the cement, measuring sand, handing out nails—it makes me feel alive."

Maria feels pride knowing that her labor contributes to building homes for those who have suffered. "I feel happy because people now have some certainty. They suffered a lot," she says. And as she watches houses she helped build rise from the ground, she feels a sense of accomplishment. "I started this work from the bottom, and now a completed house is in front of my eyes. We’ve finished.

When Cyclone Idai made landfall, destroying the very houses she now helps rebuild, Maria was pregnant with her daughter Gabriela. “I had never seen winds like that. The water was up to my belly—we were terrified,” she recalls. Now, when Maria comes home, her daughter puts on her uniform and says, “Mom, I want to work in construction too.”

As she looks to the future, Maria feels ready to pass on her skills to others, to teach them what she’s learned along the way. "Now, I feel capable," she says. "When someone is struggling, I can support them, just as I was supported."

Famous painting in downtown Frederick. I wish I knew who the artist was. But this painting is a big deal, it looks a lot more real in person. People walking by think it's a real person, then they take a second glance and realize it's a painting. I took this shot at a slight angle and not directly facing the photo because people always walk by it and think it's real. I took a colored and a black and white version of this photo, but the black and white looks a whole lot better at night, and it really brings out the painting from the bricks.
