Very little is documented about this part of world. I know it's Artisan mining of gold is big here. We have seen many places devastated by mercury. The substance, used to separate the gold from other materials, is highly toxic and dangerous to human health, but it is currently being widely diffused into the environment, where it finds its way into the flesh of animals and fish and into other important food chain pathways. It is estimated that illegal miners use as much as one kilo of mercury to extract one kilo of gold. WWF Network has estimated that 30 tons of mercury a year are being discharged into the environment in the three Guianas and much of that is taking place in protected areas and indigenous reserves.
In the region of the upper Maroni River, a third of the members of local communities are suffering from mercury contamination with contamination levels far above the limits stipulated by the World Health Organisation.

Here is a very clever lady who is making a patchwork quilt by using scraps of patterned or picture material she finds... it's like a naive art & it turns out so lovely... I watched her for hours finding little picture like a house with sunflowers around then another piece of material with just sunflowers - she had such a artistic talent for putting it all together...
Her quilt was telling the story of how her family love to go camping & where they go camping... there is artistic talent in all of us it is just finding what suits us, I think... <3
