Sadly my macro work has had to take a bit of a back seat at the moment, as life seems to be intent of taking over more of my time than I would like.
I'm missing being able to upload anything new and keeping in touch with my Flickr friends, so I managed to grab a few moments yesterday to have some fun.
I've been reading about Google's recent research into Artificial Neural Networks; effectively a series of programs that a team are teaching how to interpret images and to recognise various objects. The information that gets "taught" to the program gets refined over time until essentially it should be able to recognise objects such as a cup, a plate, even a bird or a person.
Cleverly, the programmers are able to ask the programs to draw for them what it thinks a bird should look like, and be able to correct any errors and thereby improve the programs understanding with each progressive iteration. Another interesting approach is to feed into the Network other images and ask the program to interpret what it sees. Trees often get interpreted as buildings for example, or animals might appear within clouds that have a passing resemblance.
Google has recently released the source code for other developers to play with. So I thought I'd have a go at feeding it some of my Collembola pictures to see what it thought of them. Different configurations may result in it returning more abstract patterns, whilst others have brought out a multitude of wildlife. Eyes are very popular, and a Yorkshire Terrier seems to feature quite prominently. I was also pleased to see what looks like an elephant squeeze it's way in there too.
Anyway, an interesting toy to fill some time..
