Data journalist Meredith Broussard is an assistant professor at the Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute of New York University and the author of “Artificial Unintelligence: How Computers Misunderstand the World.”.
Her academic research focuses on artificial intelligence in investigative reporting, with a particular interest in using data analysis for social good. She is also interested in reproducible research issues and is developing methods for preserving innovative digital journalism projects in scholarly archives so that we can read today’s news on tomorrow’s computers.
Broussard is an affiliate faculty member at the Moore Sloan Data Science Environment at the NYU Center for Data Science, a 2019 Reynolds Journalism Institute Fellow, and her work has been supported by the Institute of Museum & Library Services as well as the Tow Center at Columbia Journalism School. A former features editor at the Philadelphia Inquirer, she has also worked as a software developer at AT&T Bell Labs and the MIT Media Lab. Her features and essays have appeared in The Atlantic, Slate, and other outlets.

Martian image reconstructed using our artificial intelligence model from 4 photos acquired by Curiosity at SOL 3523 (4 July 2022 from 20:22:00 to 20:33:05 UTC) using the ChemCam. The images from Curiosity's ChemCam are not in colour. To colour the image, the artificial intelligence relied on what it had learnt from the MastCam's raw images, while the model used is the one based on assembling photos from Perseverance's SuperCam Remote Micro Imager. The result is not only the colouring of the image, but an improvement in the peripheral area of the image, both in sharpness and overall contrast. The file is available at 585.85 million of pixels for download at 25001x23433 pixels.

I find artificial intelligence image producing systems amazing and frequently ask them to generate a self-portrait just to see what I get. Another example from the DALLE-2 program is two posts back. Both are apparently female, although I have to say DALLE-2 is "sharper" than Dream.😊 My creations are very basic. Prompting these systems is an art in itself, and people who are good at it can produce some amazing images. You should check it out. AI is going to end the careers of a lot of professional photographers.
