After the Civil War, the Federal government began cracking down on polygamy. Many polygamous Mormons fled to the Arizona Strip to escape persecution, and many polygamists remain there today. In 2011, Warren Jeffs, President of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and controller of much of Hildale Utah and Colorado City, Arizona, was convicted of sexual assault and aggravated sexual assault of children and sentenced to 20 years in prison. Pipe Spring was lost to the Mormon Church over penalties associated with the anti-polygamist Edmunds–Tucker Act of 1887.
