This small moth that is mainly a woodland species can be found on the wing in the UK from April to June. The larvae will feed on lichens that grow on the trunks of Oak and Beech trees.

Papilio machaon is one of the largest and most conspicuous butterflies in Germany. It belongs to the family Papilionidae and has a wingspan of 50 - 75 mm. The species occurs in many parts of the northern hemisphere. There are 2 generations per year, the first flying from April through June and the second from July - through August/September.

Chrysididae are parasitic wasps. In Central Europe there are 120 species of them, most of which are hard to identify. Despite their size of only 5 - 10 mm they are eye-catchers with their bright metallic colors.

Enallagma cyathigerum is a typical member of the family Coenagrionidae. It has a length of 29 - 36 mm and a wingspan of 40 - 45 mm. The species is widely distributed in Europe and temperate Asia. It also occurs in the High Atlas Mountains in Morocco. This damselfly inhabits bodies of standing water as well as slow-flowing streams.The main flight period lasts from June to August.

Polyommatus icarus is the most common and widespread member of the family Lycaenidae and is found throughout Europe, North Africa and Asia. Its habitat includes various environments like flowery meadows, heathland, woodland clearings, grassland and even along railroad tracks. There may be 2 or 3 generations depending on climatic conditions.

The Large Wall Brown (Lasiommata maera) belongs to the Nymphalidae family and is found in most of continental Europe, central Asia and North Africa in altitudes up to 2,000 m. It prefers rocky and stony areas and edges of forests.

Hedychrum nobile belongs to the Chrysididae family and has a length of 4 - 10 mm. The species occurs in South and Central Europe and in North Africa. It is a parasitic wasp and flies from June to September.

Ebrechtella tricuspidata is a medium-sized crab spider (Family Thomisidae). It occurs in southern, eastern and central Europe where it can be found both in dry meadows but also in scrubs and bushes along ponds and streams and sunny edges of woodland. With a size of 3mm males are only half as big as females.

Anax imperator is one of the largest dragonflies in Central Europe and belongs to the family Aeshnidae. It often flies high up in the sky looking for prey. The flight period lasts from May to August.

Melanargia galathea is a medium-sized butterfly and belongs to the family Nymphalidae (Sub-family Satyrinae). It occurs in most of Europe and can be found in forest clearings, meadows and grasslands. There is one generation per year flying from June to August depending on climatic conditions.

It is distributed from Northern Spain as far northeast as Lithuania, but is not present in the U.K. and Scandinavia.

Rhagium mordax belongs to the family Cerambycidae and has a length of 13 - 22 mm. The species occurs mainly in woodland throughout Europe and Asia. On sunny days it can be found on stumps of various deciduous trees like oaks, beeches and birches or on the flowers of umbelliferous plants. You can find them from May through August.

Phyllobius argentatus is a beetle of the family Curculionidae and has a length of 3.5 - 6 mm. The species is widespread almost all over Europe and temperate Asia as far as Japan. They feed on the leaves of deciduous trees and shrubs where they can be found from spring until summer.

Dolomedes fimbriatus is a very large, semi-aquatic spider of the family Pisauridae. Adults prefer wet habitats and can be found on the water, hunting water insects but also tadpoles and small fish. Juveniles mainly hunt in vegetation which may be farther away from the water. The species occurs throughout Central and Northwestern Europe.

Aglais io belongs to the Nymphalidae family and is widespread in Central Europe and temperate Asia as far as Japan. It ofen overwinters in houses or trees. Therefore it is one of the first butterflies to turn up in spring. The striking eye-spots on its wings keep predators away. There are 2 generations per year.

Ischnura elegans is one of the most common damselflies and occurs throughout Europe. The flight period is from early May to the end of September.

This Brilliant Emerald has just emerged. He has already unfolded his glossy wings and will soon take off for his very first flight.

Wood White (Leptidea sinapis spec.) on cuckooflower. The butterfly belongs to the Pieridae family and is found in Europe and great parts of Asia, although it is currently declining in many regions. It flies from spring to summer.

Chrysolina cerealis is a beetle of the family Chrysomelidae and has a length of 5.5 - 10 mm. Females are bigger than males.The species occurs in many parts of Europe as well as temperate Asia, i. e. from Wales (Snowdonia National Park) in the west to Eastern Siberia in the east. The flight period lasts from April to September.

This is the last Large White I have seen this year. She was enjoying the warm October sun sucking on heather.

Coenagrion scitulum is a species of small damselflies belonging to the family Coenagrionidae. They have a length of 30 - 40 mm and mainly occur in the Mediterranean area. Due to the climate change they are spreading to the north. Their flight period lasts from mid-May through the beginning of September,

Ischnura elegans is one of the most common damselflies of the family Coenagrionidae. It can be found in a variety of environments with standing or slow-flowing waters and occurs in many parts of Europe.

Lycaena alciphron belongs to the family Lycaenidae and occurs locally in some parts of Europe as well as Morocco and Turkey. In Germany it can be found in average mountain areas, but it has become rare!

Araschnia levana f. levana belongs to the Nymphalidae family and has a wingspan of about 32 mm (spring generation) and 38 - 43 mm (summer generation). Pyrrhosoma nymphula is one of the first damselflies to appear in spring. They emerge in April/May and fly until August. The only damselfly flying earlier is the Common Winter Damselfly (Sympecma fusca) which overwinters as an imago.

The species occurs in many parts of Europe.

Anatis ocellata belongs to the family Coccinellidae and with a size of 8 to 9 mm it is the largest Ladybug in Central Europe. The species inhabits coniferous woodland throughout Europe and Asia except in the extreme North. The beetles feed on Aphidae and butterfly caterpillars.

Vespa crabro is the largest member of the Vespidae family with a size of 23 - 35 mm. It occurs throughout Europe and to the east as far as Japan. The species is considered as "endangered" and thus under legal protection in Germany. European Hornets are not aggressive but will sting when they feel threatened!

Sicus ferrugineus is a fly belonging to the family Conopidae and is widespread throughout Europe. Adults have a length of 8.5 - 9.5 mm. They feed on nectar and pollen and can be found from May through Seotember. Their larvae are parasites of bumblebees.
