El castillo palacio de Arteaga es una obra de estilo gótico que data del siglo XIII, y fue en su origen una torre central con otras a los lados. En el año 1358 fue destuido por Pedro de Castilla, pero se sevantó de nuevo posteriormente. Padeció las guerras que se sucedieron en el siglo XV además de las inclemencias de tipo natural. Una vez restaurado, albergó a los carlistas conducidos por el general Velasco, quien ocupó el edificio como residencia personal ....cave destacar que actualmente "Zaldua" esta ofreciendo un servicio espectacular en este castillo,
Dentro de su evolución histórica, es curioso destacar los vínculos familiares que unían a la familia de los Arteaga, fundadora del castillo, con la emperatriz Eugenia de Montijo, esposa de Napoleón III. Por estos lazos, se le cedió el castillo al hijo del emperador. Se mandó traer a especialistas y trabajadores del palacio de Versalles

En el corazón de la reserva de Urdaibai nos sorprende la espectacular belleza de esta torre neogótica de piedra caliza y mármoles de Ereño. Dicha construcción ha guardado el mismo terreno desde el siglo XIII, aunque su fisonomía actual se la deba a los arquitectos franceses Couverchef y Ancelet quienes, en agradecimiento al nombramiento como vizcaíno originario del hijo de María Eugenia de Montijo y Napoleón III, lo reconstruyeron en 1856.
En la actualidad el Castillo de Arteaga ofrece la opción de alojarse en cualquiera de sus catorce exquisitas habitaciones y de disfrutar de una inolvidable velada gastronómica en un entorno que se ha esmerado en respetar sus características originarias. Cada habitación es diferente y especial, tanto por su decoración y comodidades como por las vistas que la rodean. Pero en la mesa no es menor el trato concedido a todos los detalles, ofreciendo al cliente la posibilidad de confeccionar cada menú combinando cuatro cartas diferentes inspiradas en los elementos fundamentales del enclave: los asados de la casa, la tradición vizcaína, la vida de palacio y la creatividad.
En definitiva, un lugar que consigue transmitir el homenaje que una emperatriz francesa, María Eugenia de Montijo, quiso ofrecer a un pueblo: Gautegiz-Arteaga.

I was trying to get a long exposure of this lovely building the Riviera Hotel, but the sky made his appearance and a fine rain gets into the picture.
The following is taken from Wikipedia as this was one of the famous buildings build by the mod in Havana.
The Havana Riviera was originally owned by mobster Meyer Lansky who had been inspired to build it after visiting his friend, Moe Dalitz's nine-storey Riviera Casino on the Las Vegas Strip. It was intended to rival the comfort and contemporary luxury of any Las Vegas hotel of the era. The choice to build in Havana was because Lansky simply did not want to be subject to U.S. laws or the scrutiny of the FBI. The hotel was officially operated by the "Riviera de Cuba S.A. company", established in 1956. The original incorporation papers also listed the names of certain "Miami hotel operators", a Canadian textile company and several others. It was built at a cost of US $8 million, most of which was provided by the Bank for Economic and Social Development (BANDES), a state-run development bank set up by then President, Fulgencio Batista.

When we mentioned to our vet that we were going to Carmel for a few days he told us about this Kinkaid painting he had & loved, so we thought it'd be fun to rip it off make an homage for him....

Esa fue la impresión que nos proporcionó descubrir este castillo en pleno estuario del Urdaibai ya que no esperábamos encontrar ningún palacio neogótico en este encantador lugar de Vizcaya dominado por la llanura y el verdor de la vegetación propia de esa reserva natural de la biosfera.
Ubicado en la localidad de Gautegiz-Arteaga fue construido sobre los restos de una antigua torre, documentada ya en el siglo XV, que se encontraba en estado ruinoso a mediados del siglo XIX.
Por órdenes de la emperatriz Eugenia de Montijo, que fuera esposa de Napoleón III de Francia, los arquitectos galos Couverchef y Ancelet levantaron esta magnífica construcción entre los años 1856 y 1870 en la que la belleza obraba razón según establecían los cánones del gótico francés.
Para ello levantaron una torre rectangular cuya sillería presumía de grandeza gracias a su mármol gris y rojo. En cada una de sus cuatro fachadas dobles arcos ciegos ojivales engrandecían y realzaban su presencia mientras quedaba coronada con torrecillas amatacadas sobre ménsulas escalonadas, almenas y merlones que desempeñaban una función puramente ornamental.
Esta torre principal quedaba conectada a un torreón octogonal desde cuyo interior una escalera de caracol proporcionaba acceso a cada una de sus plantas interiores.
El lugar era apropiado para una residencia digna de la talla del personaje que lo había encargado pero que nunca llegó a ser habitado por la emperatriz debido a trágicas circunstancias históricas y personales...
