collaboration with Stuart Schechter

material: cast bronze/stainless cable

site: Leon M. Goldstein High School for the Sciences, Brooklyn, NY

project team: Chris Taylor, Sarah Rodrigo

commissioned by the NYC Board of Education, the NYC School Construction Authority, and the NYC Dept. of Cultural Affairs Percent for Art Program

In the main entrance of the new Leon Goldstein High School for the Sciences floats a sculptural meditation on the nature of profound discovery. The central image is a Great Horned Owl in flight, created by hundreds of precisely fixed and suspended cast bronze elements. The owl, emblematic of wisdom, is formed by a dense array of symbols culled from language and science. Like a comet, the form becomes more porous as it moves toward the tail, eventually dissolving into a particulate array, a sort of 'contrail of rationality'.

Numerals, letters, and symbols in the owl incorporate text, equations, and other kinds of embedded meaning; e.g,. a row of numbers depicts the Fibonacci series. Elsewhere, the sculpture includes letters spelling out dozens of names--geniuses in their fields--drawn from a variety of cultures and historical epochs.

The subject matter is simultaneously: pastoral--depicting an elegant moment of avian activity; scientific--relating to the activities within the building; and philosophical--a meditation on the nature of esthetic and technological pursuits. Science infuses the sculpture, evoking interpretations relating to phase change (physics), the nature of perception (biology/physiology), and human experience (phenomenology).

Title: Gondolier in Venice

This original Venice, Italy oil painting is by artist Christopher Clark. This lovely scene from Venice was painted live during an oil painting demonstration at the Jerry's Artarama in Tempe near Phoenix. I was promoting my new oil painting classes and workshops that I'm teaching there.

While strolling through Venice this past summer, I discovered that there's a paintable scene every 10 feet. Wherever you turn, any time of day, you are surrounded by breathtaking scenes, so the only difficult thing remains choosing which one you're going to capture. This scene took place as I walked across one of the countless bridges spanning the canals. I was taken with the wide array of colors happening among the buildings and the reflections on the water. The gondolier riding by was just perfect timing as well.

Maki-e can be done by brushing fine gold leaf particles through a mesh sieve. But it can also be done with deliberate placing of little cut pieces (kirikane 切金). Using wooden or bamboo tools prevents cling, but it's not easy.

collaboration with Stuart Schechter

material: pewter/ steel cable/ ballchain/ steel/ motors/ processors

site: Charlotte-Mecklenburg County Courthouse, Charlotte, NC

architect: Kallman McKinnell & Wood, Boston, MA

commissioned by the Arts and Science Council, Inc.

Persistence of Vision is at once an artwork, an event, and a reflection of community.

The building blocks of the piece are small pewter portraits of Charlotte citizens. These heads precisely reflect the demographic makeup of Mecklenburg County, and are individually controlled by 1600 discrete motors.

At the start of a workweek the heads are gathered into a porous cloud. Gradually, gracefully, they move one by one to create an epic three-dimensional face. This likeness then slowly reverts back into a cloud.

The following week a different portrait builds and dissolves. In a cycle of assembly and dispersion, new faces are continually formed over time.

For example, one sequence portrays an elderly Latina. Reaching an optical crescendo on Wednesday afternoon, her face gradually disappears by Friday evening.

Subsequent weeks witness the formation of a 25-year-old African-American man, an Asian boy, a middle-aged Caucasian woman, and so on. Persistence of Vision is not “of” anyone in particular; it is “of everyone”.

An allegory for the justice system on both the macrocosmic and microcosmic levels, the sculpture reflects the organic process of the law and the society it serves.

On day two, with the foil background dry, we burnished the lines of our drawing and set to painting. Again, I love brushes, and this one was so delicate. I used it for the sumi outline.
