Using a dissonant array of printed and patterned textiles, San Francisco artist and Fashioning Cascadia Artist-in-Residence, (June 10 - 21, 2014), Stephanie Syjuco, will work with participants to create limited edition line of garments that speak to ideas of: modern day camouflage; re-envisioned “ethnic” prints; and surveillance technology. For Syjuco’s two-day workshop, the Museum will function as a sewing area, showroom, and photo studio for a fictional fashion line exploring the phenomena of dazzle camouflage, a WWI-era method of applying graphic patterns onto battleships to confuse enemy aim. She will give a talk on the history and uses of dazzle camouflage and its relationship to modern day surveillance technologies, work with participants to design and piece together their own uniquely developed dazzle fabrics from existing mass-produced prints, sew their own wearable or accessory utilizing this personalized camouflage pattern, and culminating in a fool-the-eye fashion photo shoot.
