Fluorescence telescope of Pierre Auger Cosmic Ray Observatory at Coihueco mountain. The charged particles in an air shower of cosmic rays also interact with atmospheric nitrogen, causing it to emit ultraviolet light via a process called fluorescence. The observatory's second detection method uses 24 telescopes, placed at four high locations, to observe the trail of nitrogen fluorescence and track the development of air showers by measuring the brightness of the emitted light.

The Combined Array for Research in Millimeter-wave Astronomy (CARMA) was an astronomical instrument comprising 23 radio telescopes. These telescopes formed an astronomical interferometer where all the signals are combined in a purpose-built computer (a correlator) to produce high-resolution astronomical images. The telescopes ceased operation in April 2015 and were relocated to the Owens Valley Radio Observatory for storage.
