A Nine-banded Armadillo pauses for a drink from a ground level bird bath/waterer in Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge, Texas.
From the National Wildlife Federation:
"Approximately 20 species of armadillo exist, but the nine-banded is the only one found in the United States. The term “armadillo” means “little armored one” in Spanish, and refers to the presence of bony, armor-like plates covering their body. Despite their name, nine-banded armadillos can have 7 to 11 bands on their armor.
Nine-banded armadillos are found in the southeastern United States, but their range has been expanding continually northward for more than a hundred years. A few have even been spotted as far north as Illinois and Nebraska.
These armadillos are generalist feeders and use their sense of smell to track down almost 500 different foods, most of which are invertebrates such as beetles, cockroaches, wasps, yellow jackets, fire ants, scorpions, spiders, snails, and white grubs. A lesser part of the diet is comprised of small reptiles and amphibians as well as the eggs of reptiles and birds. Less than 10 percent of the diet is from fruit, seeds, fungi, and other plant matter."

Found in the Americas, placental mammals, these animals have notoriously bad eyesight but keen sense of smell. They eat a variety of insects including grubs, worms, etc. Known for their digging, they have large claws and short legs, but are very quick. They have a leathery armor to protect themselves and will ball up when threatened.
I was taking photos of a RSH when I noticed something out of the corner of my eye. The armadillo didn't even know I was there.

Ludwig Erhard Haus
Berlin
Architect: Sir Nicholas Grimshaw
"There are many places in Berlin, which are almost unknown, because the average tourist won't visit them.
Most of them are symbols of the ambitious construction programs initiated by the government of the reunified Germany in order to give to the city a new distinctive character and to launch Berlin into the third millennium.
The Ludwig Erhard Haus is a unusual and futuristic building located in the borough of Charlottenburg, just a few meters from the famous Zoolisches Garden and the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church.
It was designed by the English architect Nicholas Grimshaw in 1994.
Fifteen tremendous arches create the building’s signature ribbed structure that adapts to the slight curve in the irregular property at its base.
The Ludwid Erhard Haus was designed as a service center for the Chamber of Commerce and the Berlin Stock Exchange and it hosts many public and private offices as well as fairs, conferences and forums
Today, a vertical facade on the side of the building facing the Fasanen Strasse hides the actual round form of the structure. Due to his external structure, Berliners call the building "armadillo"."
I love armadillos, but do not like to step in the holes they leave behind as they forage for grubs. This young one was out beside the highway and I walked close enough for some shots. The road was on a slope so I was able to position myself at the bottom so the animal was at eye level. This one was very curious and posed for quite a few photos as it sniffed the air and listened to the sounds from my camera. They reportedly have very poor eyesight. Usually they run away very fast when they realize a potential threat is nearby.

The SEC Armadillo (originally known as the Clyde Auditorium) is an auditorium located near the River Clyde, in Glasgow, Scotland. It is one of three venues on the Scottish Event Campus, which includes the SEC Centre and the SSE Hydro.
The armadillo has short stubby legs, but can move very quickly in spite the fact they carry this leathery armor shell. They root into the ground, digging for grubs and insects leaving holes in the ground. They also have poor eyesight, so they rely more on their ears and nose to detect food and predators. The Nine-banded armadillo is Texas state small mammal. An interesting fact is that they like to swim and can hold their breath and impressive four to six minutes!!
