The unique flooded forests of the Mekong in northern Cambodia, a Ramsar wetland site of special importance.
The Mekong used to have extreme, but regular seasonal variations, with the floods in rainy season raising the surface by some 4m here and across a vast area in the surrounding forest and wetlands. Trees are adapted to this special environment and grow sometimes large arial root systems, that provide access to nutrients at different water levels.
The seasonal flooding however has become irregular in recent years, with an assessment through the IUCN in 2023 finding the most severe threat to the habitats in the altered hydrology driven by dam operation upstream, causing mass-die outs of flooded forest trees.

Light painting has been used to achieve the light in this image. The location was carefully thought-out as of time of day and conditions .
I came across this shot while photographing a small group of goats - I don't recall how it was that I ended up actually above this one but it certainly provides a unique of what the goat sees from his perspective looking down. Weird I know. 😕
