One more spectacular view on the cathedral with Chachani and Misti volcanoes, really an impressive panorama.
The district San Lázaro is the oldest of Arequipa and the most representative of the "White City". It was here that the Dominican priests settled in 1538 to evangelize the natives, building a hermitage that would prepare the foundation of Arequipa two years later.
The name of Arequipa comes from the Aymara language phrase "qhipaya ari" or "Ari qipa" (from 'ari': acute, sharp or pointed; and 'qhipaya': behind), which would mean "the place behind the sharp mountain", in this case the Misti volcano. According to another tradition, the Inca Mayta Cápac, having once crossed these lands with his soldiers, was seduced by the beauty of the place. He then ordered his men to stop by telling them, in Quechua: Ari quepay (Yes, let's stay here).
The city of Arequipa is surmounted by 3 volcanoes. On the roofs of Saint Catherine Monastery, we see them very well.
You can see here the Chachani which culminates at the respectable altitude of 6075 m (19,997 ft).

Arequipa - Pérou/Peru
The Convent of Santa Catalina de Siena was built in 1579 and is located in the historical center of Arequipa, Peru. It served as a cloister for Dominican nuns from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries, and still houses a small religious community today. The complex, which stretches over 20,000 square meters, is built from volcanic sillar stone and is organized into cloisters, living quarters, a plaza, a gallery, and a chapel.

The Cayma district is reputed to be the "balcony of Arequipa" thanks to its privileged situation which allows to contemplate the city as a whole. From Mirador de Carmen Alto, you can enjoy one of the most beautiful views of the Rio de Chile Valley, a green flow created in pre-Inca times on agricultural terraces.
