"Architextures" is a series of composite images. Each image is a mashup of multiple photographs. At least one of the sources is of an architectural subject, anything from closeup walls or windows to broad cityscapes. The added images provide texture or pattern. In some, the architectural forms are preserved and obvious. In others, the pictures become pure abstractions. Yet in all of them, the inherent geometry, angles, lines, and repetitions of the architecture are essential to the geometry and esthetics of the final image. Most of the source images used for this series are already posted in this photostream. The links to the original and source images are listed below.
The Gothic Tileworks images use the same common foundation image used by the Deco Tileworks sets 11 & 12. See pictures from those series for explanations about the basis for these Architexture images. In the Gothic series, the Deco tilework images are combined with other elements.
Gothic Tileworks 13a. Added to the base Deco tile images is a lancet window from a stone cathedral. It is from the Bryn Athyn Cathedral, a facility of the New (Swedenborg) Church, in Bryn Athyn, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, northeast of Philadelphia. (The lancet window image is pending posting to this photostream.) In this image, “Gothic” refers to the historical period and architectural style circa 1100-1500 CE, because the cathedral is built in the Gothic style of basilica plan churches.
Gothic Tileworks 13b. Added to the base Deco tile images is an image of a tree. This is the image used in the Deco Tileworks 12 set to create orange and red coloration. In this case, the image merge used different mathematical operators to preserve the tree branches. In this image, “Gothic” refers to the dark mood of culture and arts that was popularized in 19th century Romanticism.

Inspiration for the name “Deco Tileworks” is in the geometry of the images. Decorative motifs suggestive of 1920’s and 1930’s art meld with rectilinear blocks suggestive of tilework in the public spaces and architecture of that era, such as railway and subway stations, movie theaters, and high rise office buildings. The Deco Tileworks sets all share a common foundation image. That base picture derives from views of the Atlanta, Georgia skyline and its tall buildings (source images and explanatory notes are elsewhere in this photostream). Specifically, there were two original source images, Facets #1a and #2a. These were combined to create Facets #2e, which by itself was reworked into the common core for the Deco Tileworks. Image 11a, the first in this set, is the common foundation image for the rest of the Deco series.
Base images used for the Deco Tileworks series are:

The Architextures 11 series of Deco Tileworks uses no other source images or composition elements. Only the Facets #2e image is present. Variations of texture, color, and form come from mathematical merges and blends, and from simple mirrors and rotations.
The Architextures 12 series of Deco Tileworks continues the basic themes and geometries of the Deco Tileworks 11 series, but it introduces bright colors. Whites and yellows were created with no additional source images or composition elements, just various merges and saturations of the common deco tileworks foundation image. Blues and greens were created by overlays with another of the Atlanta Highview images (blue sky facets v2). Oranges and reds were introduced by overlays with an unrelated non-architectural image (sunset trees & red rock cliffs _ arches national park, utah).

The starting image for Frontier Fine Art is: Lazy Little Colorado _ Cameron, AZ. It is a view of the Little Colorado River in northeast Arizona. The Little Colorado drains a large basin that includes the Painted Desert and the lands of the Hopi and Navajo. This view is from the Cameron trading post north of Flagstaff, looking northwest and downstream. About 10 miles further along, the Little Colorado starts to downcut into the earth, a 57 mile run that forms the Little Colorado River Gorge. At its end, 3000 feet deep, it joins the mighty Colorado River as one of its major tributaries. Their junction marks the end of Marble Canyon and the beginning of the Grand Canyon of the Colorado. Except for its some of its head waters and its final reaches, and except during flash storms and snow melt, it is a dry wash most of the year, as seen here.
To create the art variation Frontier Fine Art, a clapboard wall and window were created using bits of wood imagery (snips from stock images from the internet). The Little Colorado landscape was then processed to a crude paintbrush style, then applied to the wall as though it was a hand painted mural (architextures 02a _ frontier fine art). To further augment the trompe l’oeil sense of the scene (architextures 02b _ frontier fine art), a three dimensional object was hung on the wall, the spurs and lasso (also a stock item from the internet, source no longer known).

On y trouve une prison.
This fabric of Robin's popped into my head the other night. After 30 minutes of searching for where I'd seen it before, I'd decided that I had to do some kind of project with the color combo. I decided (of course) on a pillow. This one will be for my bed. A big pillow. Made from 2.5-inch squares set on point. I can't wait to find some time to get started!
I wanted to capture the different aspects of architecture. The way I set the collage up was a "from the ground up" type of order. I started with what looks like rubble and the base of the buildings and put the frames and windows up top, with the more finished portion of the building in the middle. It gives a feeling of "all of these things add up" to create this beautiful architecture, while capturing the ruggedness in the textures of the construction site.
