Designed, fabricated, and installed by a student team at Virginia Tech, the Masonic Amphitheater in Clifton Forge, Virginia, provides a public park and performance space for the rural Appalachian community. Organized by design/buildLAB, a third year architecture studio at Virginia Tech, 16 undergraduate students were asked to work with the community to plan and submit individual design proposals. Once received, a master plan was then devised as a convergence of each student’s proposition. For the interior, ALPOLIC panels in four attractive finishes were CNC-routed to clad the underside of the structure.

Connor is a graduated architecture student from Ireland, he is participating at the Wastelands project in Helsinki, Finland.
He was so nice and friendly, telling me all about Inipi--the sweat lodge they were building-- the workshop he was involved with. When I visited, his group members were busy preparing for the purification ceremony to be held in the evening at 8 p.m.
The hole in the ground was already dug, it would be covered on later with planks and tree trunks that were laying there in a pile. The stones were being heated in an exterior fire as we were speaking, they would later be removed into the central pit in the ground.
Connor was truly excited about his workshop. He had great respect and admiration for Thomas Yellowhair who was leading the project.

The conversion of agricultural land to a suburban estate in the foreground, with a remnants of the greenfield rural landscapes in the background.
I recently re-visited a town I know very well, Halstead. A place that is currently undergoing many new changes in the landscape, particularly around the greenfield fringes of the town, including the development of multiple housing estates which are located on land which was previously used for agriculture. These estates, including the one I've just visited (below) raise a whole host of questions about the future of the town, but also as a nation, questions about our ever-diminishing relationship with the rural landscape and nature. Should we continue to pave over the countryside? Build now, think later - I think not.
