The Selfridges Building, a landmark building in Birmingham, West Midlands.

The building is part of the Bullring Shopping Centre and houses Selfridges Department Store. The building was completed in 2003 at a cost of £60 million and designed by architecture firm Future Systems. It has a steel framework with sprayed concrete façade and aluminium disc cladding. Since its construction the building has become an iconic architectural landmark and seen as a major contribution to the regeneration of Birmingham

The architecture firm Future Systems were appointed by Selfridge's then chief executive, Vittorio Radice, to design only the third store outside London. Although Selfridges was physically integrated with the Bullring Shopping Centre the client wanted a distinct design approach which would set the store apart from the rest of the development and become an instantly recognisable signpost for the brand. The building's facade is curved, wrapping around the corner of Moor Street and Park Street. The facade comprises 15,000 anodised aluminium discs mounted on a blue background.

After construction the building won a number of awards including:-

RIBA Award for Architecture 2004

Concrete Society Awards, Overall Winner 2004

Structural Steel Awards 2004

Royal Fine Art Commission Trust, Retail Innovation 2004

Institution of Civil Engineers, Project Award Winner 2004

Civic Trust Award 2004

Retail Week Awards, Retail Destination of the Year 2004

Built in 1927-29, in Tulsa, OK., this is the largest Art Deco church in the world. The design of the $1.25 million edifice is credited to Adah Robinson and Bruce Goff. Robinson was an art teacher at Central High School in Tulsa, and eventually chair of the art department in the University of Tulsa. Robinson sketched the original ideas for the church. Bruce Goff, formerly one of her high school students, then took the sketches and came up with the design for the church. Officially, the architecture firm credited is Rush, Endacott and Rush where Goff apprenticed (from age 12 and became a partner in 1930). There is still some debate over who was more responsible for the building. The church credits Adah Robinson with the design of this building, while Goff experts maintain that it is clearly his design. The definitive book on the subject, Tulsa Art Deco says of that issue that "it is not the purpose of this book to offer a resolution to that controversy."

The tower soars 225 feet high. Its straight lines provide physical, visual, and philosophical linkage to the Gothic cathedrals of past ages as well as allowing the designers to indulge in the Art Deco celebration of the vertical. At the top of the tower, as well as on many of the other high points, is a stylised sculpture representing two hands raised upward in prayer. This motif is one that is echoed through out the building and is one of the areas of design that can be traced back to the early drawings by Robinson. Like many Art Deco buildings the Boston Avenue Church revelled in the use of various different building materials, so metal, glass, terra cotta, Indiana limestone and Minnesota granite can all be found.

The exterior is decorated with numerous terra cotta sculptures by the Denver sculptor, Robert Garrison, who had been a student of Adah Robinson's in Oklahoma City. These sculptures include several groups of people at prayer representing Spiritual life, Religious Education and Worship. In these groups again can be found the two hands together motif. Designs on the exterior reveal classic Art Deco styles with organic plant designs, which, like the stained glass windows were based on Oklahoma flora, most notably the tritomas and coreopsis flowers.

In 1978 the building was listed on the US National Register of Historic Places and was designated as a US National Historic Landmark in 1999. - From Wikipedia.

The complex contains Birmingham Science Museum, Birmingham School of Acting and Birmingham City University's Faculty of Computing, Engineering and The Built Environment, part of Birmingham Metropolitan College and a Giant Screen cinema. The complex was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II on 2 July 2002, although it had been in use since the previous year.

Millennium Point is a Millennium Commission project, and it was designed by Nicholas Grimshaw and Partners. Construction is estimated to have cost £114 million, and £50 million funding was granted by the National Lottery.

The building is constructed mainly as a cuboid, with a cylindrical offshoot holding the cinema. This annexe glows different colours at night. The front fascia is mainly glass, and is covered in long slats with the logo of Millennium Point revealed behind.

The purpose of the complex is primarily educational, and as such is home to Thinktank, Birmingham Science Museum. The largest tenant of the building is currently the Faculty of Technology, Engineering and the Environment - the technology faculty of Birmingham City University. 26 February 2009. No apologies for revisiting this smelly little corner.

On Christmas Day 2007 I took several photos of dumping and litter along Moorefield Road and the adjoining St Loy's Road. (2) (3) (4) (5) (6).

My earlier photo of the same corner was used in Where We Live; a Guidebook to Urban Design by Deer Park Alpha. (Jointly published by the former Solent Centre for Architecture+Design and South East England Development Agency (SEEDA). The latter was a government funded development agency. It lost its funding and closed in 2012.

This nook was used to illustrated an aspect of poor practice in urban design - blank walls. In fact the problem is worse. Although there were no bags of rubbish dumped here on 26 February 2009, I was told this corner was sometimes used as an alfresco toilet - especially by some of the street drinkers who congregated in Moorefield Road at the time.

Haringey continues to work with local Police to tackle the problem - including fines and a Dispersal Order. But a longer term solution is needed for the sake of local residents and businesses; and other people walking along these streets.

The brick wall on the left is part of Bruce Grove Railway Station. The Royal Mail main Tottenham Sorting Office is located in Moorefield Road. So is Mems DIY and another longstanding builders' supplies firm. Bruce Grove Primary School is in the next street. And San Marco Restaurant is close-by.

On 5 March 2009 I again raised this with Haringey's Urban Environment Department - which deals with Waste Management, Planning, and Regeneration. I asked if there was a design solution which could help. On 19 March 2009 I had a helpful email from the Neighbourhood Management Service about the Council's initiatives to tackle problems caused by street drinking in the area.

I had hoped to post the reply from the Haringey's Urban Environment Department. I never got one.

That Department was later abolished.

But not forgotten.

Bathroom or washroom design ideas involve much more than just where to put your toilet and tub.

My personal estimate of when it was built, based on its appearance, is: 1978-1984.

I am fond enough of the building that I decided I would put a bunch of heart and soul into trying to find out when it was built, but I was unable to track down a definitive answer, even with an in-person visit to the state library of Michigan to look at old city directories. Shit!
