"Begin jaren vijftig werd het tuinbouwgebied ten noordwesten

van Leidschendam bestemd voor woningbouw – onder andere om de woningnood in Den Haag op te lossen. Als onderdeel van deze uitbreiding ontwierp stedenbouwkundige Wim de Bruijn twee ‘superhoven’: De Heuvel en Prinsenhof, twee rechthoekige carrés van een dubbele hoeveelheid flatgebouwen rondom een groen hof met voorzieningen. Dergelijke grootschalige, besloten structuren zijn zeer zeldzaam in de Nederlandse stedenbouw.

Het ‘grand ensemble’ De Heuvel in het zuidwesten werd als

eerste gebouwd en was bestemd voor middenstanders en de

hogere arbeidersklasse. Prinsenhof is qua maatvoering groter
