The Roma Street Railway Station has high cultural significance having been the main Brisbane Station early in its history and the point of departure for many long-distance travellers for generations. The building is also architecturally important as an exceptional example of late 19th-century railway station architecture.
Over the years the building suffered haphazard renovations as well as from the lack of maintenance. Architectus in association with Michael Kennedy Heritage Architect worked with Queensland Rail and a team of consultants in the planning of the Stage One Stabilisation Works which commenced in 2011, and started onsite in 2012. The works involved making the whole building structurally sound and watertight, as well as the restoration and reconstruction of external elements on the upper floor.

Isn't this just, well, fabulously hilarious?! How much fun to have a flower motif throughout an entire building. And why not, I ask?! Someone out there will *love* this, and what a statement it makes about the ability to create individuality on a tight budget.

'The concept for RED Homes – Responsive Environmental Design homes is based on promoting eco-minimalism by integrating sustainable design strategies with contemporary architecture, using ecological materials and solutions to minimise energy consumption.
Minimised heat loss through building envelope by utilising high levels of thermal insulation and triple-glazed windows.'

'A contemporary reworking of the Highland vernacular, constructed with energy-efficient cross-laminated timber, sheathed in profiled metal cladding. High thermal mass retains heat and it is entirely breathable, creating a healthy low-allergen, low-carbon home.
A cross-laminated timber construction makes for an attractive, healthy, easy to heat home.'

Large, open plan loft area containing kitchen, dining and living areas.'

A real shame this - apparently the contractor used for both this and the other Graeme Massie design (Plot 21: Black House) went bust before the Expo opened... I think both homes could have been two of the most interesting on the site.

'The whole life house - designed for the long term, to change and adapt to the complex ways that families now live and work. The house features a separate ground floor annex, which can be adapted for use as a Granny flat, student bedsit, home office or provide additional bedroom space for a growing family.
Flexible accommodation, highly insulated, thermal mass floor, solar panels, zoned heating, passive solar gain.'

'Analysis of home, family and community within the highland context informed the succinct terrace creating a distinct sense of place. Simple environmental strategies provide well lit healthy spaces incorporating a system of water recycling, heat recovery, solar water heating
and air source heat pump.
These are generously planned spaces animated by natural light and a diversity of internal spaces to inhabit.'

How useful is all this storage space?! The curse of the modern identikit Wimpeyland Box is of course the lack of storage, and quirky spaces like this.

'A three bedroom live-work unit which uses simple design to create a sustainable modern approach to living.
The live-work units are positioned at either end of the plot and are connected by a 'garden wall' which provides privacy and protection to the courtyard garden.
A passive solution has been adopted in the approach to the design which promotes natural ventilation and heating through the house by means of large south facing windows and a double height void in the living space.'

'A state-of-the-art, carbon neutral living space as natural as the environment, which considers carbon reduction from every angle.
High thermal performance air tight external structure with complementary heating/ventilation system. Factory assembled long panel construction, high quality finish, quick on site assembly, minimised waste during construction.'

Again, one of the most interesting aspects of the Expo came to the fore here, with a contribution from a mainstream housing developer, Tulloch Homes Express. It was easily the most 'dressed' of all the properties, and in true 'Show Home' style, displayed an spectacular lack of taste in interior design! Nevertheless, very encouraging to see a developer trying something a little different - I do hope they'll take some ideas on board.

'An innovative design using responsibly sourced, commonly available materials and well understood construction techniques. The building performs 'passively', regulating the internal environment and creating a series of enjoyable dwelling places.
We have included a solar buffer space at the front of each flat, central biomass (wood pellet) boiler and a highly insulated thermal envelope.'

OK, this was otherwise a very straight-forward apartment block, but crucial, I believe, to the success of the Expo site. I think it should be compulsory when planning a new housing estate that there is a genuine mix of housing: detached, flats, private, social, family, professional. Isn't such a mix the very definition of 'community'?
And, let's be honest, how many flats have a huge 'solar buffer space' like this. Even if it does look on to what is, well, something alarmingly typical of volume housebuilders...

Window detail of the new "Dr Chau Chak Wing Building", designed by Frank Ghery, which is part of UTS. Also described as 'Brown Paper Bag Building'. As previously described the brickwork is amazing. As I was walking around I also noticed that individual windows 'lit up' reflecting either a part of this building or buildings opposite and they became like framed images. I thought this was very pleasing and interesting so shall go back one day to have a closer look at the whole building. Many people seem to regard this building just as ugly as the old UTS tower. :) www.architectureanddesign.com.au/news/frank-gehry-s-uts-t...

I cropped this photo somewhat in PS assuming that, judging from the brickwork, only the corner of the building looked vertical to me, so made this vertical. Some of the window frames seem to be at an angle. May be a tripod and spirit level would be handy here ... :)
The project: www.flickr.com/groups/rollinaday The November RAD project was to choose a subject starting with 'A' and then follow the alphabet for the number of frames in the roll. I decided to upload all this time, even the dodgy shots - from A - Z.

Apparantly this design was voted the 'people's favourite'... It is quite telling that Fraser stated that he "tried to build something familiar to the house-buying public". I must admit that apart from the sustainable design, there was not much interesting architecture going on with either of the Malcolm Fraser designs... Saying that, if it nudges forward mass-housebuilding by acting as a bridge between mass-market trite and 'architecture' then I'm all for it!

As a cat owner, this just stole my heart! I mean, who cares about the rest of the house - they've got a floor-to-ceiling cat scratching post! Genius! If I were to buy any of the houses on the Expo site, I have to say this is definitely a very tempting USP!

'A healthy, breathing home, centred around a dynamic living space which adapts to suit the time of day. Generous and light filled during the day then cosy and intimate at night.
A feature is the dynamic breathing permeable insulated roof, drawing fresh air directly through the insulation and in the process heating and cooling the air passively.'

I think a lot of people didn't quite 'get' this house, as I overheard a few comments about the 'waste of space' at the entrance. The entrance used for the Expo was actually the 'back door' into the ground floor office - the spiral stair to the first floor principal entrance hadn't yet been built. A bit of a shame, as I think that was possibly one of the most crucial part of the design...
