Notes: Melhuish was the stepson of the early photographer John Buchanan Smith. Arthur James Melhuish (1829-1895) After a brief stint as a pawnbroker, Melhuish entered the world of photography, perhaps stimulated by his widowed mother’s 1846 marriage to John Buchanan Smith. His first public showing was in the 1855 London exhibition of the Photographic Society, where his seven waxed-paper architectural studies included one interior. In 1856 Melhuish sent nearly twenty architectural views to the society’s exhibition. By 1857 he had begun to work with collodion, although he showed two waxed-paper views at the society. He continued to exhibit there annually through 1860, submitting some waxed-paper photographs in 1859. His last participation in major exhibitions was at the 1861 Architectural Photographic Association in London. Melhuish was an inveterate inventor, although none of his inventions found a wide market. In 1856 he patented his design for a roller slide that permitted the photographer to carry a number of sheets of sensitized paper and change them in the camera without the need for a darkroom. His 1860 metal camera was promoted as being one-third lighter than wooden ones and twice as strong. Melhuish was more successful at building a photographic printing business, employing several assistants, but he had some economic reversals and by 1871 was listed as a picture dealer, operating out of his mother’s house. He was declared bankrupt by 1882. Melhuish rebuilt his reputation, becoming Photographer Royal and by the 1890s hosting a British Museum of Portraits at his Pall Mall studio. He was secretary of the Photographic Association from 1861 to 1889 and was elected a fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1863. Melhuish was born and registered as a Nonconformist Protestant, which perhaps explains why his later contributions to the literature ventured away from photography to include The Geology of the Bible and The Truth about Ghosts. In the 1881 census he listed himself an “artist,” but by the 1891 census, near the end of his life, Melhuish proudly claimed to be a “Photographic Artist.” (source: Luminous Lint)

Keep well back, we're 20 stories up here looking east onto Slater Street in downtown Ottawa. This building is called Constitution Square II. I like this webpage link below which shows the height of the local architecture compared with the Parliament's Peace Tower's height, which must not be exceeded. The idea is that local buildings should not tower higher than Canada's Parliament and Parliament Hill's Peace Tower.

MuCEM + Fort Saint-Jean, Marseille, France - 2013 -Architects: Rudy Ricciotti and C+T architecture
Views, sea, sun, a mineral quality, which all must be orchestrated by a program that will become federal and cognitive. First of all a perfect square of 72 m per side, it is a classic plan, Latin, under the control of Pythagoras. Within this square, another of 52 m per side, comprising the exhibition and conference halls identified as the heart of the museum.
Around, above and below are the service areas. But between these areas and the heart, openings entirely bypass the central square and form interconnected spaces. More interested by the views of the fort, the sea or the port, the culturally overwhelmed visitor will choose this route. Along two interlacing ramps, he will then plunge into the imaginary of the tower of Babel or of a ziggurat in order to climb up to the rooftop and on to Fort Saint- Jean. This peripheral loop will be a free breathe, enveloped by the smells of the sea from the proximity to the moats, a pause to dispel any lingering doubts about the use of the history of our civilizations. The MuCEM will be a vertical Casbah.
The tectonic choice of an exceptional concrete coming from the latest research by French industry, reducing the dimensions to little more than skin and bones, will affirm a mineral script under the high ramparts of Fort Saint-Jean. This sole material in the colour of dust, matt, crushed by the light, distant from the brilliance and technological consumerism, will commend the dense and the delicate. The MuCEM sees itself evanescent in a landscape of stone and Orientalist through its fanning shadows.

Wyjątkowo wstawiam takie zdjecie 😎 bo ten obiekt robi niesamowite wrażenie pomimo, że często odwiedzam naprawdę wyjątkowe domy i apartamenty. Ponad 200 metrowy kolos o dwóch bliźniaczych wieżach - zwieńczony na szczycie „diamentem” który łączy te wieże. 🔥😎 A na szczycie 47 piętro basen z widokiem na wybrzeże zaprojektowany tak, że braknie tchu… Nooo powiem krótko „jaram się takimi wnętrzami” 😎
