This is a partial view of the amazing glass facade of HARPA, Reykjavik's great concert hall, designed by Olafur Eliasson. The patterns of all of its facades are changing and ever so mind-bogging. This here looked like an urban bee hive to me :)

Happy Windows Wednesday!

No matter what state, city or country, skyscrapers have taken on unique designs such as reflections of other structures, lights, abstract or maybe one that looks like a staircase. Seems like no one structure is designed exactly the same, but to marvel at their design is enough for a painful neck

Stanford Memorial Church. It was designed by architect Charles A. Coolidge, a student of Henry Hobson Richardson, (an American architect, best known for his work in a style that became known as Richardsonian Romanesque).

The building was completed in 1903 and is Romanesque in form and Byzantine in its details, inspired by churches in the region of Venice, especially, Ravenna. Its stained glass windows and extensive mosaics are based on religious paintings.

Stanford Memorial Church has withstood two major earthquakes, in 1906 and 1989, and was extensively renovated after each.

Stanford was founded by railroad magnate, U.S. Senator, and former Governor of California Leland Stanford and his wife, Jane Stanford in 1891.

In order for someone to be able to enter, the gates take three keys. This church is another with a unique structure and is known for helping to feed or house people.

Throughout the long days that seem so much longer we all want a quiet place that's quiet so we can unwind. Some places people may go is a church sanctuary or maybe many may climb a mountain. Churches in New Mexico are sanctuaries for peace.

'Organic in the inorganic' was what came to mind for this picture, as despite the metal and glass and sheer monumentalism of this building there is something organic to the feeling of it: a tribute to those who imagined and designed it.

A refrigeration technician I met inside told me that it was the greenest and most sustainable building in Sydney. Then I researched it and found that it had won all sorts of awards, so: kudos to the architects and builders, and all who sail in her.

Many churches in Massachusetts have anywhere from Gothic to old Roman architecture. Churches can be hundreds of years old and maybe younger. No matter the church, their architectural designs are unique

Picture Perfect - Santa Barbara, USA

Santa Barbara is one of the most serene and picturesque cities I have ever visited. The tranquil atmosphere, combined with stunning natural beauty, makes it an ideal destination for relaxation. When we arrived on a Monday morning, it felt more like a quiet Sunday afternoon—there was hardly any traffic or activity, adding to the city’s peaceful charm.

Santa Barbara has a fascinating history as a hub for early cinema. In the 1920s, it was a major centre for silent film production, with hundreds of films created there. Notably, Charlie Chaplin was a frequent visitor to the area. Perhaps the city’s stillness today is a remnant of that golden age of Hollywood.

The backdrop of the Santa Ynez Mountains adds to the city’s allure, and it’s easy to see why so many movie stars have chosen to call Santa Barbara home. Its combination of natural beauty, Mediterranean-style architecture, and relaxed vibe is truly captivating.

Our visit wasn’t without its challenges—we had to spend much of our time searching for a store to replace a suitcase that had broken during our trip. However, even this small inconvenience couldn’t overshadow the city’s charm.

One highlight of the visit was the iconic Santa Barbara Courthouse. This historic landmark is not only architecturally stunning, but also offers panoramic views of the city from its clock tower.

Santa Barbara is a paradise; Disneyland is a paradise; the U.S. is a paradise. Paradise is just paradise. Mournful, monotonous, and superficial though it may be, it is paradise. There is no other like Santa Barbara.

It was a very long swim to shore!

Santa Barbara, was the only place the ship could not dock, so we had to use tenders to get into the city.

Santa Barbara was Home to the World’s First Motel

The world’s first-ever motel (a "motor hotel") was built in Santa Barbara in 1925. It was called the Milestone Mo-Tel and was located on what is now State Street. At the time, a night’s stay cost just $1.25!

And It was once an Island

Millions of years ago, Santa Barbara wasn’t connected to mainland California. It was actually a separate island before tectonic movements pushed it into the continent. This geological history is why the Santa Barbara area has unique soil and rock formations.

The Selimiye Mosque and Complex (Turkish: Selimiye Camii ve Külliyesi) is an Ottoman imperial Mosque, which is located in the city of Edirne, Republic of Turkei. The mosque was commissioned by Ottoman Sultan Selim II, and was built by architect Mimar Sinan between 1569 and 1575. It was considered by Sinan to be his masterpiece and is one of the highest achievements of Islamic architecture.

As we travel we often times find our solitude in attending church for prayers to keep us healthy during our journey. To be able to take in the many different sights is an incredible life and a great learning experience.

This was a shot of Canary Wharf station on the Jubilee Line (as well as others!) of the London Underground. I really like the way the oval shape of the glass roof and surrounding concrete frame the escalators in the scene.
