Female Paraphidippus aurantius, commonly known as the golden jumping spider.

Seen and photographed within her silken sanctuary, safe and snug.

Perhaps a juvenile/sub-adult, given her tiny size and just beginning to colour up.

A native orb weaving spider, found in the east of this country.

Argiope keyserlingi was given the common name St. Andrew's cross spider, due to the construction of bands of web silk that form the arms of an X-shaped cross, similar to the one upon which St. Andrew is traditionally said to have been crucified.

Female less than 10 mm body length.

Incredibly small female crab spider, just a few mm body length. Perhaps a juvenile. I only saw her on these native kangaroo paw flower buds due to the contrasting colours. Out of place when I came upon her, as they usually hang out on flowers of similar colour to themselves.

This could be Thomisus spectabilis, commonly called spectacular crab spider or simply white crab spider.

Usually white, but can have patches of yellow, or appear fully yellow. The legs and head appear almost translucent.

Another suggestion is Zygometis xanthogaster, the milky flower spider (due to the eye ornamentation).

Of interest is that the spider also takes advantage of its colour scheme's reflectance of UV light to create a colour contrast in the visual field of the bees that subsequently attracts them.

Female jumping spider, ever alert, making her way through foliage.

Alert for danger, alert for a mate, alert for a potential next meal.

Dear little spiders, but supremely remarkable, efficient and successful hunters.

So very sweet, tucked in between the buds of Callistemon citrinus, our native bottlebrush. It looks to be a cozy bed with all those soft hairs on the plant.

Perhaps a juvenile given its remarkably small size, just 5 mm or so in length.

I believe this is a female, but not yet sure which species.

The smallest Salsa sp. I've come across, just a few mm body length. Perhaps a male and/or juvenile.

Salsa is an Australasian genus of orb-weaver spiders.

I understand that S. brisbanae and S. fuliginata are so similar and with the same location range that only microscopic examination may determine the differences.

A tiny mother wolf spider with her precious cargo.

Wolf spiders do not build conventional webs and are wandering hunters - so to be able to continue hunting and eating, Mama carries her egg sac around with her, attached to the rear of her abdomen with silk.

Inside her egg sac, all her little babies are developing. When they are born, they will ride on her back until their first moult, then leave to make their own way in the world.

Fascinating and wonderfully impressive maternal care from this beautiful little arachnid.

Genus Artoriopsis.

Body length 7 mm

Oxyopes elegans commonly known as elegant lynx spider, with all his spines and spikes on show.

This species is only found here in Australia.

The hinged, touch-sensitive hairs on the legs help the spider to move freely about its terrain and are important in interactions ranging from mating to prey capture.

Male, 5 mm body length.

So tiny, I almost missed him.

Living typically near water, preying on small fish and aquatic insects.

Seen here, on the banks of the Youghiogheny River in Pennsylvania.

Commonly known as fishing spiders, these arachnids can run with great speed over water in pursuit of a meal.

This is a female. I've labelled her here as both Dolomedes tenebrosus and Dolomedes scriptus as input from members of iNaturalist indicate it could be either, given their similarity of markings.

Body length 25 mm.

A soft, mellow yellow haven for this tiny spider. It was hard to photograph, being so deep within the foliage, but I hope

I have portrayed the little haven that it inhabited and the protection that it might have felt within its refuge.

And I love the even tinier water drop caught on the silk.

This is Badumna longinqua, native to the eastern parts of this country. The species can be found living in tree trunks, rock walls, retreats and foliage within tangled webbing. Once they have found such a refuge, they sit and wait for prey to pass by.

Around 5 mm body length.

In this ventral view, one cannot deny the similarity of this tiny, scorpion-tailed spider to the Alien face-hugger....the parasitic lifeform that hatches from xenomorph eggs in the Alien movie franchise.

But this little spider is just 10 mm total length.

These distinctive looking Australian spiders were given their common name because they sometimes curl the ends of their abdomens upwards in much the same way as a scorpion does - but there is no venom loaded sting to this tail.

Males are much smaller and lack the extended abdomen.

The tiniest St. Andrew's Cross spider I've come across and yet a superb hunter from the start.

Female, body length just a few mm.

There are obvious large, black circles surrounding this little jumping spider's eyes, making them seem much larger.

The circular spots make each eye stand out and become more prominent - not just the two large forward facing ones, which are a feature of jumping spiders.

The binomial of this species is Opisthoncus polyphemus and is derived from Polyphemus of Greek mythology who was one of the cylopse described in Homer's epic poem, Odyssey.

Female, dorsal view 10 mm body length.

This sweet little native jumping spider is the smallest Maratus scutulatus I have come across. Therefore, I'm assuming a baby/juvenile. So very tiny!

I believe a female, just a few mm in length.

NB: not captive, seen on the garden patio tiles.

When I came upon this spider, he was weak but still defensive, raising his front legs to make himself appear bigger and threatening....and at that moment I could see the double spurs on his first two legs. These, together with the large pedipalps, general body form and size, indicated this was a male.

I gently took him to some sheltered undergrowth in the garden.

I understand that at the time of year that I saw him (January, summer here in Australia) and particularly during periods of high humidity - the male trapdoors are out and about looking for females.

They are eaten by the female, or naturally die after mating. Perhaps that was what was happening here.

Commonly known as the brown trapdoor spider. Male, 15 mm body length.

I believe this jumping spider with lovely markings is within genus Holoplatys, perhaps species semiplanata.

Holoplatys species have a long, flat, oval cephalothorax and a long, flat, oval abdomen. I have found them under tree bark and around the home, in external cracks and crevices

Female 10 mm body length.

On an evening stroll, like a bright lantern in the dark, the St. Andrew's Cross spider displayed her dynamic colours and markings in the flash of my camera.

She's missing a leg it seems.

This one was small compared to many I've seen, body length no more than 10 mm.

NB: not captive. Seen on the side of a garden plant pot.

Native here in Australia, Opisthoncus quadratarius is a large and robust jumping spider species.

Here we have a dorsal view of a female, around 10 mm body length.

These spiders within family Tetragnathidae are really special with their lengthy, svelte form and long, sometimes oversized jaws (chelicerae).

This one is specifically within genus Tetragnatha. Resting on the underside of a reed, by a still body of water. And one can see the prey between the spiders jaws here.

Body length around 15 mm.

It was exciting to come across this unique scorpion-tailed spider recently.

Arachnura higginsi is just 10 mm in length, but what wonderment in those few, tiny mm. This is a latero-ventral view, seen hanging in the centre of a small orb web in green shrubs.

These distinctive looking Australian spiders were given their common name because they sometimes curl the ends of their abdomens upwards in much the same way as a scorpion does - but there is no venom loaded sting to this tail.

Males are much smaller and lack the extended abdomen.

I wanted to get a clean stack all I needed is for her to sit still for long enough. I am grateful that she did. I am well pleased with this image of her

The lens was set to the 2:1 setting which means this is a 4:1 with a 2x crop factor applied makes it pretty much an 8x greater than life size.

I always apply a 5:4 ratio crop in post and start that in Helicon.

I am currently printing on my 3d printer an adapter I for the Olympus MCON-P02 Macro converter that has a little hood on it. I am looking forward to seeing how that goes once I have all of the bits printed. Designing is much fun and fixing 3d printers I think sometimes can be a good test for ones patience.

Here it is again the little bundle of cuteness on a flower covered in pollen. I am sure it will be most annoyed with me now and soon sitting back on a blade of grass cleaning it all off!

I am well pleased with my diffuser creation and the fact that it has 2 diffusion panels. Not just one on the front.

This is a 4 image hand held focus stack. The idea of F8 was to try maximize DOF as even though not a fast mover still does not hardly pause for long this lens they say is at its sharpest at F5.6.

I picked the flower walking past a local church as I felt the colors where suited to this little one.

Spare a thought for this bloke. spent the last few days in my shower.

Unless he lost a wrap battle with the Dolophones down the street and the looser had to watch me shower for a few days.. Not sure...

I gotta admit AWKWARD!!

Some cool markings on this wolfie from tonight.

A new flash to play around with. The change to sequential low from sequential high is not a deal breaker. Stacking is still fun.

I do have an uncanny way of putting both this flash and the V1 into Multi mode with my forehead if I forget to lock it.

The plan is to do some serious usage and then do an honest comparison between the 2 godox units.

I decided to go check the burrow of that female Wolf spider that I have made some amazing images of lately. I was 30 feet from her dwelling place when I see 2 sets of eyes. I made my way closer and one took off and this male remained.

I am 80% certain this is a Banded Union Jack wolf spider Tasmanicosa ramosa ..

And I am pretty sure I came upon them having a bit of a get together. It was just starting to rain which was a bit of a downer as I lost sight of this one and looking around all I could see was rain drops glistening in the dark. BUT I am looking forward to seeing her with babies down the track!! And they will be amazing babies I mean look at him!!...

I picked up a new addition to my slow growing macro kit this week.

A 2x tele converter. I was using tele converters a long time ago for automated focus stacking and had watched things like the 90mm OM systems lens be launched and the fact it worked with a tele converter was exciting for me and many others.

I took a long time to catch the bus but better late than never.

I am quite impressed with sharpness using the MC-20 with the 90mm and what is achievable hand held blows me away.

I look forward to getting more practice in using this kit.

One of the more relaxed SP-- I tried with a smaller Maratus Griseus the other day but it was very hot and he was VERY active.

I recently designed and 3D printed a mod for my 90mm macro lens.

3 iterations and this is what I am happy with. It seems to improve the image quality which is what I was after.

I need to fix up the minor hot area in my catch light there which will be done today. Phew Lucky as one will be off to the UK later today so I am glad to have figured that out first..

Siler Jumping Spiders were first scientifically named by Eugène Louis Simon (1848-1924), formidable arachnologist of France; he described more than 4000 spiders!

Apparently 'Siler' - a new species in 1888 - was derived from a neo-Latin word 'Ciscularer', which means 'to jump'. They prey on ants and I saw this tiny one among ants although they didn't seem afraid. Perhaps they sensed she'd already had a meal!
